Charcoal gasifier questions

Jeff and David could you say which charcoal making system worked best for your Fir and Pine woods, please.
Pallet wood? Or raw cut woods?

I liked the barrel method with a second barrel on top as a chimney, propped up on bricks, covered and air hole buried to extinguish for high speed high volume. Not very subtle though…

I started out with a large TLUD from a 55 gallon drum. It took skill to stop it at the right time. That was when I was only making pine char. All the chunks need to be about the same size. Easy to burn it all up, but doable.

After that wood types get mixed up. I know I made some in the outdoor boiler. I’m sure I could make it with the cone kiln. Of course the skill to know when to add fuel and when to stop it takes practice. Same size chunks would also apply to the cone kiln for best results. Like all things in this world, practice makes perfect. Well, maybe not perfect ! ! !

So, the real answer is practice . . .
