We drape the chains over the tires and wrap a ratchet strap around them and the tire below the axle Don. Then roll the tractor forward to where we can ratchet strap the two end together and fasten them. No slop.

Hi Jan, i use them rubber “ladders” (kapellstroppar) with binder wire, in like a star shape, to secure the chains.
Too tight chains tend to “climb” on the tire, with known result…
It’s kind of an “art” to put on tire chains and make them stay in place.

Do you put the rubber tensioners between the chain links or between the rim and the chain?
On the Zetor, I only have snow chains on the front; I never have any problems with that one.

Hi Jan, just something like this:

 ![20261010_130926](https://dow.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/original/3X/5/5/55e2f7a6450818b2867355932e32906494916717.jpeg)
Inside, needs more “ingenuity” to not catch in anything.
 ![20261010_131227](https://dow.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/original/3X/5/b/5b2a15f423acc362e17e494c2f4795ee348e9c89.jpeg)
Outside, just slap them on, but needs same tension as inside, to keep the chains from “wandering” this rubber straps should just “adjust” the chains when driving, not force them in place.[https://youtu.be/Xac2JBu6Yl4?is=bPilR1CxxnX4Oo-Z](https://youtu.be/Xac2JBu6Yl4?is=bPilR1CxxnX4Oo-Z)
If you check out this contraption, you may see how the “thinking” should be, with correct strapping even the way to loose chains will stay on… 😉

</div>

I’m wondering what causes the wandering. I’ve used both hommade chains and the current studded ones. I’ve never used straps or anything and never had the problem.

</div>

I think it’s just a coincidense, ground, tires, one bent link on a chain can make it “turn” (I’ve experienced that) forced driving ofcourse (driving a volvo 240 with snowchains in 100km/h through the snowdrifts is fun, get of the chain that slips of, to the inside, clearing the axle from brake lines, parking brake cable and other stuff before getting heavy stuck against springs and carrier beam, in the ditch, is not fun)

But i would say what affects it most is the lenght of the cross-linked chains. To short, and the chains will never stay on.
And i forgot: i have never had any luck with to tight chains, they seem to “wander” or creep off.

A few days ago I picked tomatoes and plums. Then it suddenly turned for the worse. Only a couple degrees above freezing and raining.

50 miles north of me they got 6-8 inches of wet snow and trucks got stuck uphill. Winter is here.

It’s an odd year. Leaves are just now turning and dropping. Two years ago we had snow on October 14. This year we have been sunny and mostly high 50’s. Nothing below mid-40’s at night. Some light frost inland of course. A person could get used to this.

Hey TomH. we’ve been having a similar Late September/early October. Good for extended late ripening of course:

 ![Photo on 10-11-26 at 8.55 AM](https://dow.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/original/3X/6/a/6aa03863efaaea2f44f08477f3aa35c81782134d.jpeg)

But bad for bugs freezing down killing off. And the Wife’s insisted outside Honey-do’s. I had to set up another (the 7th) 32" high growth bin for her for next year. My 70+ plus aching back! #8 and #9 still in boxes for the future.

Been worried about my 2000 W Wen inverter Generator because I thought I ran the gas out of it last fall but didn’t. Took a few pulls but when it started it ran fine for an hour before I shut it down. Exactly one year old E-10 treated with Ethanol Shield and Stabil storage. Color me happy and astounded. I don’t think I’ll be that careless again. Could have went a whole other way.

TomH. I think where the unit (or cans of fuel) is stored makes a huge difference. My shop is Big two floors and not so sealed up. Sure it eventually heats up insides in the summer. But what it does do is seasonally daily stay internally the same day and night in season. Summer it stays above 60F. Now at 45-50F. True winter it will be 30-40F. All of these above the seasonal dew points. It has no daily shifts in temperatures. So tanks, cans and metals are not daily condensate sweating. Internally and externally.

A guy has made a pyrolizer for plastic so as to harvest a liquid fuel suitable for gasoline engines.

I think I would go bankrupt trying to do this with the cost of the stainless steel alone! Very cool though.

You don’t really need all the Stainless. Step 1 is just simple distillation like in a pot still. truly the same as a closed retort for wood vinegar. you are separating on boiling points so you can monitor the temperature. I think we have a whole thread on it.

This is new though. they are stripping the chlorine out of pvc. so it doesn’t create all the nasties.

It’s still rainy for this time of year, but starting to warm up a bit. Warm enough for our geckos to start putting in an appearance.

Cool to see though, we don’t have any of those colorful creatures here. Just really small lizards / salamanders about the size of a finger
