Giorgio, I do agree. Rust is part of the plan in Michigan. They spread salt on the roads here. The salt makes a slush that coats the metal and eats the cars.
Can you imagine paying $70,000 for a truck only to have it ruined before you can pay off the loan? Mental illness.

It is insanity. I saw a video of a Michigan boneyard where there were trucks and cars not even 10 years old sitting rotten. Now I know where all the sub 100,000 mile LS engines come from.

They love salt in New England too. Rust was always an issue and the determining reason of when to retire a vehicle. Here in Chile they rarely put any on the roads. I drive a 25 year old Suzuki and it is rust free. I think I will probably kick the bucket before it does.

It was much worse in the 1970’s and not just for American made cars. Saw plenty of toyotas and Datsens rotted away. Then they started running American cars through electro-phosphate tanks prior to painting and that got you about 5 years of extra protection. Of course that’s about the time that financing went from 2-3 years up to 4-5. Basically trying to keep them functional through the term of the loan.

I think I’m going to miss it when the World Cup craziness ends. The reactions to the US from all the visitors is pretty surprising. I think people in the US take too much for granted and though none of the Youtubes are showing the scummier parts of the area’s they are in it still makes you feel pretty good about what they do report. I’d still like to find some of the food they rave about. Certainly not to be had in my area.

I’d photoed our 2024/25 Danish Exchange Student saying in the yearbook that the weirdest thing about the US she found, “Was that the food was so good”. And we just sent back to Taiwan, this years Exchange Student now a bit overweight after no more active sports since early May. And then eating ahead on her discovered American favorites. Chipotle restaurants. Taco Bell. My Wife’s dinners. The last-Hurrah big dinner at Red Lobster.
TomH., the wife took her, an exchange friend, and the two foster girls 11 and 12 up to Seattle for a three days walking tour. Only actually ~130 roads miles away. Could be done in 2, 2.5 hours. At 1 to 3 AM. Normal times of the day; it ALWAYS takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours with the clogged-up traffic, accidents, and break-downs slow-downs. Now, Summer season roads repairs, and lanes expansion constructions.
I most cheerfully sent them up on the Amtrak train; which dumped them off at the King Street station right next to the World Cup stadium. Then an easy 45 minutes north for me driving them to the Centralia Amtrak station. Then a relaxing 1.5 hours for them on the train. First game was on Monday. Second game to be Friday of that week. They were there Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning wedged in-between. Wife had booked a rental-by-owner top floor apartment for them back in February. Ha! Ha! All fine for us. Them with lots of walking, seeing sights&smelling (Puget Sound sea, and alleys urines), features touring, and artisan foods. Me at home lazing with the dogs.
Then they missed the train back by five minutes. Be 24 hours for the next train that was not already fully events travlers booked. And NO place to be had to stay another night.
So. . . . then me driving, slugging my way up mid-day in 3 hours to them using every by-pass surface roads cheat tricks I’d learned way-back-when, working and living up there. The Wife of course insisting on driving “her” vehicle back using the Nav system. Which of course directed her right out the downtown core onto the Interstate bumper to bumper s-l-o-w, for 4.5 hours to get back home. With only the last ~60 miles at normal highway speeds. I got to side-seat practice a lot of close-eyes zoning-out mantras. Only eyes popping open at ANY suggestions to get out of the flow for foods stops. No, No, and NO!!. Eat out of your backpacks!
The overseas World Cup visitors raves here are about Ranch dipping sauces. What? Common out here PNW.

Yeah, hitting 25C/77F here now and sweat is pouring. Still milling every oppertunity I get inbetween work, grandchildren, birthdays and chunking. Past 2000 lpm or 7,000 boardfeet a while ago.
@Jan , you asked me about stacking boards tight and I said they will shrink and create small gaps anyway. What I do do - is remove any bark left. Bugs will thribe under any smal stripe. This is the bark knife i use.

I finally found a use for politicians!! I made a thing to press the door lock button with an old political sign frame after my mom her keys in the car. Probably the only political thing that has worked great exactly like any policy. Not as intended but with a little tweaking it became useful.

Had I realized the signs could be bent like that to unlock cars decades ago. They might have made me rich. The new cars dont have ignition to leave the keys in and you can do everything from the cell phone now i think. I am debating on whether I keep it and make a handle like the 60 dolllar version or put it back in the scrap bucket. I am just happy I didn’t go spend 60 bucks for one.

Quick report from Sweden.
It’s nothing compared to some of you guys, 28C or 83F in the shade here in the evening when I woke up after my nightshifts (and the several obligatory cups of coffee), slept beautifully after all nightshifts for once so I thought I’d spend some time sawing some logs.
I find it’s perfect mindnumbing work together with lawnmowing when the lack of sleep makes you less clever than ever but still get stuff done. Quite a bit too hot for me, however it needs to be done sometime.

Are they really night shifts this time of year for you? You must have pretty close to 24 hours of sun this time of year.
