Life goes on - Winter 2024

Sunday walk

Even on a sunday it is hard to find some quality time. The views are always ok here. Just before sunset.

They don’t requrie knowing how to drive a stick for drivers education since the early 1980s. They were 6% of the market in 2010, and dropped to .9% of the market in the first half of 2023.

Automatics are more fuel efficient for everyday driving. A lot of cars have buttons on the knob you can use to manually shift with. There are also fewer stick shift related accidents. The major drawback is automatics are much harder to repair.

Sean, it was mainly a joke
When I grew up and auto trans were really odd birds we used to say they were made for disabled and Americans
Nowdays it’s mostly about personal preference since the market is close to 50/50.

You know, back almost 50 years ago when I got my Healey and then later a Triumph Spitfire, I said I would never own a car with an automatic tranny or air conditioning. It’s amazing how old age can change you.

It’s like the adage: if you are under 30 and not a democrat - you don’t have a heart, but if you are over 30 and not a republican - you don’t have a brain. Yeah, this is going to get me in trouble. But that is the great thing about old age, you just don’t care anymore.

Yes. For old people we say. Maybe that is why I prefer an automatic nowadays :grinning:

But true, modern automatics might be equal in economics. Still impressed by Mr Steve s Toyota CVT video.

Sean, I cannot agree with the opinion that cars with automatic transmission are more economical than cars with manual transmission, if you consider that in an automatic transmission the clutch is constantly “slipping” (turbine clutch in oil), many plates rotating next to each other, a hydraulic pump,
these transmissions need an oil cooler. Well, newer models of transmissions, for example DSG, have two dry clutches, but still contain many rotating elements,
For me, a manual transmission is the best, minimal losses, easy maintenance,
for everyday driving I have an Audi A2 1.4 Tdi, year 2001, the consumption of this vehicle is about 4 l / 100 km,

It is true though. Apparently in sweden if you take your drivers test with an automatic, you can only drive an automatic.

In 2020, 86% of sweden’s new car sales were automatic transmissions. which is one of the higher percentages in the EU for 2020. Seeing 292k total car sales for the entire year, just seems small to me. Luxemburg was 93% but only 46k vehicles.

I always preferred a manual trans but when I bought a new truck in 2000 to mount a snow plow to the original trans blew up 400 miles over warranty. Total piece of crap. I bought a beefed up replacement and it lasted for another 15 years of hard duty. I’m sure I would have gone through a new clutch about every 3 years. Up where Bruce Jackson lives there is a town where the stop lights can be at the top of about a 30 degree grade. Takes some talent to get off the brake and let out the clutch before you roll into the car behind you if you are driving a manual.

:slightly_smiling_face: I will wish you a happy thanksgiving, and a life filled with gratefulness whether today is labeled on your calendar or not! The kind, helpful, and smart folks here are way up there on my list of things to give thanks for.

In the bible it says in all things we are to give thanks to God. Some times it is very hard, I know this from personal experiences in my life. But looking back when I didn’t give thanks to God, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It is simply amazing how all things work for good for those who believe and are called to His purpose.
Every day I live, I give thanks. Happy Thanksgiving Day to you all on this day, May everyone and your family be blessed.
Blessings to Yehovah Almighty God and His Word the Messiah the only Son Yeshua (Salvation).

@Woodrunner , It looks like they spread calcium chloride on your roads as they do here in the U.S.A. 's “Rust Belt”.

Its always a struggle to find any time, especially with a large family. I get about an hour in the morning before work to my self.
So i have to prioritize my projects. My goal was to have a heated work space at my place so i can be more productive during the winter months. That being the goal i havent had any time to make chunks or drive the truck.

The past couple of months for an hour every morning I have been working to insulate my shop.

I was given an old outdoor corn boiler which i converted to burn wood.

Three weeks ago dad an I got the now “wood” boiler hooked up and for the first time (at my place) i have a warm shop to work in. SO NICE!!!

Now with snow on the ground and temps dropping to 0F i still have things to do to be more efficient. Currently im working on replacing my two 12x10 un-insulated garage doors with insulated ones.
I purchase some nice 14x18’ high insulated doors from my work a few years ago when they replaced them with speed doors.

So my goal is to cut down these doors to the correct width, re-rivet the door end cap back on and get them installed.

Hoping to get the first one replaced this weekend. :crossed_fingers:
