Life goes on - Winter 2024

We got a couple of inches tonight and it turned to ice underneath. Anyway I found this semi-accurate description of Michigan.

and as a note the UP was given to Michigan by Congress because Michigan and Ohio went to war over a strip of land that includes toledo.

Good morning Billy. That’s 50⁰ warmer than what we have this morning.
I think im playing indoors today. We will warm up to 30⁰F Sunday and Monday.
Three days ago it was warm enough to snow 8". I purchased a new truck for plowing in September.

Just been spinning like a top lately, busy as all get out. Got my GMRS radio license, playing around with the local repeater. I doubt I’ll invest my time into HAM/Amateur radio, just seems like such a bother at least for this area.

I haven’t gotten any woodgas related stuff done and I hate that.

Since I am on a Michigan Kick
We have our own “mythical” creature. Apparently Wisconsin has a creature with a similar description called something else.

Does the heat of the candles make the chimes chime?

Yes, it makes the “turbine wheel” spin, carrying the three angels round and round, under the angels are pins hanging, that swings out and hit the bells.

Bill I tried to hit the like button
Not sure if it was frozen or of I have a subconscious aversion to it
But in either case, I will have all of my people praying for you.

Finally getting into making charcoal again after my hernia surgery. Trying to get a supply up before summer gets into full swing and the smoke nazis wake up.

Goran,
Set my Christmas chimes up a couple of days ago. It’s a great Christmas tradition.

I used to love those things. We used to have them for dinner when I was a kid, I broke one trying to tweak it to go faster, and got busted for playing with matches trying to get it lit. my mom has an overactive imagination about potential dangers so it got hidden for until dinner time for about 2-3 years.

Do you still have that county snowplow beast you had before or did you scrap it out or hide it in the woods someplace?

Well I just put another $800 into my 1993 chevy K2500 for brake work and a few other things after putting about 3 grand into it last year for new rear springs. I only use it for snow plowing here at home and the occasional run to drag something home.
But even that amount of money seems okay to me vs 45K to 70K (think $700/ month for payments) or so for a new one that doesn’t even have a plow.

I saw a story on local TV about new tech they are trying to legislate that would detect the presence of Alcohol from people inside a vehicle. It was Only a few minutes of blah blah and of course I don’t see it happening due to economic collapse. It will be years before average consumers will be buying any high priced spy cars but I suggest that if somehow they get it installed anyone with the technical chops to disable it will be shitting in high cotton because people are not going to quit drinking. I think you could just about name your price for the service.

I very rarely drink anymore but that sensor would be snipped. For people that do drink the whole autonomous vehicle thing is a better solution, IMHO. I am pretty sure there are a lot more then 1-2 people that got tesla’s self-driving for that very reason.

For people that got busted drinking the court ordered breathilizer is like 10-15k to get installed which incidentally is about the same cost as handicap vehicle modifications.

Well here PNW westside we are hard into the cloudy no-sun winter doldrums. Here is an EU explain of the same thing and the little-to-no solar . . . winds stalled . . . here the opposite with fast passing storm fronts shears damaging winds leading to forced feathering of wind turbines:

I can’t and won’t comment on the northern EU countries energy dilemma situation. Seems the Swedish DOW members are central Sweden? Not in the energy suck out ship to Germany and to other more southern countries?

A little bit similar to our three west-coasts US states and the next in-continent row of states. California being the bulldog energy gobbler. They’re now overbuilt PV and wind never able to winter offset actual usages demands.

Steve, “normal” people are affected even up here in mid Sweden. We’re right next to our most expensive area. Other than that I can only confirm this guy’s report.
I’m not a big fan of nuclear, but I realise many countries won’t have choice. I wonder what things would have looked like if Fukoshima never happened

We’re lucky up here to have a lot of hydro - and wood. Down in @Pelletpower 's neck of the woods, they may have some wood, but not enough - and they are pumping their water upphill

No hills overhere, we leave that up to you guys. Or Norway. Sorry JO and Mr Steve, in my opinion total bullshit video. Only one spike in energy last week, up to €1,05 for a few hours ( €1000/MWh). For the rest low prices, business as usual. Back to fossile in these dark months thus stable prices. More then coal and gas, nuclear is a dead end road. I have seen it on a nucleair powerplant. Worked there for six months, read myself into Chrrnobyl and turned around 180 degrees. This guy needs nuclear waste in his garden. If he is ok with that, he is allowed to say what he is saying. Sorry, my opinion and nothing more then that. Glad that Germany shows character.

Wow, Joep! For some reason I didn’t expect that. But, that’s good. As I mentioned, I’m not a fan of nuclear either. Sure, it’s a dead end, but so is fossile.
What’s rarely discussed though, is cutting down on demand. There’s a huge potential in that area and very low investments needed. Just think of it - 150 years ago people managed without electricity. I’m not saying we should, but with some effort I think most people in rich countries could easily cut their demand in half. I know it won’t happen. The “eternal growth” system we’re into won’t allow it until we’re forced to. It’s a pity though, because the faster you go the harder the inpact into the dead end.
