Life goes on - Winter 2024

Can I say the words, Global Warming? I wonder at times, my back is hurting with the rest of my body too just looking at this picture.

I’d love more global warming Bob. Just got done shoveling between the house and the wood pile. 8 inches. Just regular snow. Nothing like Chris has. 5 years ago I would have laughed at it. Got much older this year. Of course I’m blaming the government. This video has a minute and a half of what it’s like in Chris’s neck of the woods. It’s at the beginning of it. It’s why I’m going geodesic when I build my growhouse this spring.

Steve, it’s funny you posted that video. For the past two weeks I’ve been bringing back to life a 1993 Jeep XJ that has not been running for 8 years. It needed brake and exhaust work, some floor pan panels installed and a ton of electrical work. Had to fix the TPS and MAP sensors. But it runs smoothly now and is waiting on a few parts to become fully functional and able to pass the revision tecnica. Also welded up a trailer hitch for it.

Tom, seems we were cut off the same block when it comes to snow
I too preffer this climate, maybee just minus the late frost and anual hailstorms…

Its this time of year! Vegans, look away.
Look at the amount of kidney fat on this boy. A record. Thats all from the last two months of free range over a jerusalem artichoke feald l have been astablishing. Amazing crop.

Pork with some goat. Same recepie but a portion gets frozen raw to be pan baked, a portion gets hot smoked to make our traditional Kranjska klobasa, wich is similar to what most of you guys might know as Polish Keilbasa.
I spent years trying to find ways to make nitrate free meats that taste and look good without the poison and this year l think l got damn near.

This is just a sample, l hope the ā€œsmoke ringā€ penetrates a bit more before l freeze them.

Edit: the last pic is cooked sausage

I’ve been chatting on a local GMRS repeater and bringing up Woodgas when the topic gets close enough(alt energy, generators), maybe we’ll get some new members checking on the forum. I make sure to mention the website.

Cody,
I’ve been eating Neese’s brand liver pudding in place of my grandmother’s liver mush, but this year it is not available in area stores. Apparently they are not delivering to this area any more–I heard there was a shortage of delivery drivers. Not sure I want to try to make my own.

On another matter–still haven’t put the sheep’s wool in my filter. Waiting for a warmer day. We are expecting possibly 3 inches of snow for the weekend. I know that is a joke to some of you, but it is a big deal here. We have not had an appreciable amount of snow in a couple of years at least. So, it will be a while before a warm day returns.

Steve I would definitely try to air out that wool before really handling it, wear gloves. It’s unwashed so it stinks of barnyard.

Also that snow is no joke down here, mostly because it melts and turns to ice. No brine or salt can fix that.

Steve, you’re right. Inches doesn’t count, only feet. No point sitting around waiting until May :grin:

Thank you Giorgio.

Correct. It belonged to my father. I belive its from the 80s. Heavy as a pig, probably weights about 30kg. Well, its weighted purpously, for stability. Its 380v but l dont have three phase in the house so my dad got me this electronics, wich l dont know the english name of, turns 240v 1 phase in to 380v 3 phase and also adjusts frequency so the machine can now be set to preety much as low as a couple rpm, great for when you work alone. I belive the original wiring had just 2 speeds and reverse.

Inverter l guess is the word.

Parts are real quality made. All polished stainless steel.
And its designed for proffesional use, wery litle meat stays behind when you finish. I also processed nixtamalised corn etc without a problem.
Looks like a tank barrel!

A phase converter Kristijan.
Expensive in higher wattage versions.
Your Dad really love you.

Yes, thats it. And indeed it was expensive, specialy since its not a weak litle thing. 1.5kw packs some punch in this scenario. But it works like a charm.
Well he saw that l need it way more thain him, and he handed a good tool to the next generation. I respect that. And l swore l will provide him with the products of the machine but unfortunaly fate has its own ways and he did not get to enjoy a single sausage or salamy produced by the gift he gave me.

I am glad to see you posting again Kristijan. Your absence left a void that wasn’t being filled. Us old guys are not fond of change.

We got about a foot of snow so far, cold, going down to single digits at night. Highs in 20’s during the day.

Cody,
I laid the wool out on plastic on my shop floor to dry. Should I wash it or not?

I wouldn’t wash it the first time, the lanolin oils should catch dust. I have a feeling if you do need to wash it then some engine oil or mineral oil might work.

Edit: I mean the mineral oil might work to re-oil it after washing. If you do wash it, I’d dry it just by laying it out flat on some screen like you would a sweater.

Cody,
OK. Thanks for the info.
