I have an old beater with a 460 in it. It is fuel injected with a distributor. I am new to woodgas, but thought this might be a good first project. I was wondering, would I need a piggyback ECU or will the stock OBD1 work for woodgas? Would I need to program it or will it adjust based on sensor data? Also, should I switch out the existing injectors for a gaseous fuel injector like for CNG, or is it just as good to install a TBI system with a butterfly valve like Gary did with his Ranger? I have lots of questions and thought I would ask the pros. Any suggestions?
Welcome to the forum! That is just the type of truck I was looking for before I bought my Dakota. My dad had one but sold it before I knew anything about wood gas. It should be a great truck to convert. I’m sure others will chime in, but I would leave it all stock. That is what Wayne and others have done enabling it to be a dual fuel truck.

Several 460 have been done, it’s a good candidate and a few threads of those trucks are around here @mggibb truck comes to mind
I would highly recommend getting Wayne’s Book. It will save you 100s of hours of chasing down answers to questions you have about woodgas, and he even has plans for his build which you will have to modify for your vehicle. It just gives you a good solid background in what is going on. There are certainly other ways and modifications, but you will want a firm idea of what is going on.
A lot of times, it is recommended you start with a charcoal gasifier with a small engine as the first project. It is simpler build to get your feet wet. Even then the book will help a bit.
The big question is what are you planning on using as a fuel source. The wood should be fairly consistent in size. Wayne uses chunks of wood from his chunker so you have to factor in how you will process your wood prior to using it in the gasifier.
Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of a guidebook.
Welcome to the forum!
Marcus Norman documented two WK builds on youtube. Every detail. You can find them on the site or on his youtube channel. Illuminating.

I have access to a 14 " propane tank. it has 8th inch wall. would this be okay for a fire tube?
From my limited knowledge yes but it wont last as long as the 1/4.
But sometimes you have to use what you have.
