Boy howdy. I finally got the ability to get logged back in. An awful lots happened since seeing everyone at last year’s meetup. Finally making progress on getting the property cleaned up. Hoping in the next few months to get my.shop up. Figured I’d pop in and say hay. Actually made some big progress rebuilding an old 25 lb Little Giant power hammer I got lucky enough to come across.
first i got it home to find out that the belt on it was dry rotted and it exploded almost instantly. found a solution in going to 3 different tractor supplies to get rolls of baler belting and clips. the belting they sold was too long and too wide, so i had to use a multitool and razer to cut it into the correct size belt
THEN i was able to test it!..only to find out that the motor thats been on it since 1958 is nearly burnt out and has no power in it anymore. NOT TO WORRY. i went to harbor freight and got a cheap 2hp 1800rpm 110v electric motor to replace the 1.5hp 1720 rpm that was on it.
only to find out that the flat belt drive doesnt fit the new motor. NOT TO WORRY! found a machine shop nearby that made a new flat belt drive pully for the new motor because apparently finding a flat belt pully is near impossible.
ONLY TO FIND OUT that the mounting bracket on the power hammer wont work with the new motor…NOT TO WORRY! after 3 days with grinders, torches, and a drill press, i cut the old mounting system apart and drilled a new mount for the new motor.
and HOT DIGGITY! i got it running. i needs to take it apart, degrease it, clean the 60+ years of gunk buildup off of it, and give her some new grease, and she should be top notch! its only taken a couple months and countless headaches, but by golly i got it working!
also been making some headway on some wood art. when my father passes last april the funeral home quoted me a REDICULUS price for the Urn. so i ended up buying a used CO2 laser engraver for less than the cost of the urn with the intention of just making my own for him. ended up makign wood cookie art for a few local shops. not making enough to consider it a “living” but im starting to pick up more business
soon ill have my temporary shop up and running enough that i can start making small tools and knives. that, along with the wood art, should keep me busy enough while i get the new shop setup
