I have been a fan of woodgas for many years, and used to read this forum in the era of Mike LaRosa. Back then I wanted to convert a Chevy Sprint to woodgas, but didn’t actually do it. Times change, I sold my cars and got different ones, and now I have a new idea; How about converting my 318 powered 1974 Dodge camper van!
I would have to hire a shop to do all the fabrication because my ADHD won’t allow me to complete a project this large. The Wayne Keith gasifier should be the right size to get the van to highway speeds. Finished vehicle weight should be a bit under 5000 pounds, and the van can be cleaned up aerodynamically.
So far it’s just an idea, one of many possible options to make a unique classic camper van.
Is your a camper van a B Series Ram Van? I’m not the most qualified to speak on the subject, but I would think that would be a little on the heavy side to feel comfortable in highway traffic.
You won’t want the gasifier operating in the passenger compartment, but that can be fixed with a trailer
Also, you’re looking at hundreds of hours to construct a WK gasifier. Even if you get a killer hourly rate, I would think paying for that much time would require some very deep pockets.
I’m never going to discourage anyone from starting their project, but just wanted to think through some potential pain points on the front end.
