It took a lot of dedication. I played everyday for 3 years at least 2 hours a day. First 6 months was all just playing scales mostly E and A pentatonic. I dont think was able to even play one song for the first year. There are all kinds of things that are a challenge. First your body is not ergomically structured to fit a guitar. When you are young you adapt fast. When your old not so much. So I had do all these stretches torquing my wrist radially in both directions finger / wrist tendon stretching all that. Im still not fully converted yet after 6 years now. I still can not pick as well I can right handed but its getting there. Cant really expect that when I played 30 plus years. If I live long enough to play 30 years playing lefty Im sure Ill be equal there. lol You would think you would be able to fret better right handed right? In many ways this is true but not all. Forming cords is still dificult at least doing it accuratly. But I can fly around the fret board with scales. I could never bend vibrato and it just naturel to do for me lefty. I can crank 2 step Plus bends with a very fast vibrato plus I have a floyd. I play the solo for Rush / LimeLight there he cranks that 22 fret bend with the floyd at the end. I love playing that solo it never gets old.
Then there are things I was not anticipating. like typing I sometimes get the key board reversed. I mean to hit the " A " but Ill type a semi colen instead. I do things left handed I never did before without realisiing it. < thats not so much anymore, that more in the beggining of it.
I broke my left wrist and it didnât heal properly. I canât play for over about 30 minutes anymore and even less on the acoustic without it hurting. I thought about switching to lefty⌠now you scared me off.
Yeah I actually just did a bunch of research. It takes 5 to 7 years for your brain to re map and then for this become perminent coding in the other hemisphere of your brain. I have noticed this transition. My typing is now improving and am now starting to do things on guitar that are more automatic verses really thinking about it. Automatic being like I would right handed. This thinking: Where you intend to say pick the G string is not the same as if I doing learning right handed. I have the old mapping that is perminant so its a constant fight until you mentally sepperate the two maps and not confuse them. This why I have issues typing. Its a fascinating subject as well.
If my finger could be corrected though. I would not switch back to right hand I would stay on left hand guitar. We all got it wrong dominate hand defiinatly belongs on the fret board.
A facinating subject indeed. I think I am left hand dominate but was taught to do everything right handed. I am left eye dominate. So switching may not do me any good. lol. I do need to switch shooting though. It is a LOT easier to aim shooting left-handed.
