JO's gasified 92 Volvo

Cleaned up the funnel before reinstalling it. Mixed some of this rich refined fuel in with the wood for the boiler. It was struggling to supply enough oxygen

With a bit of luck I finished the restoration of the Volvo gasifier just in time before winter arrived for real. I’ve been outside welding on frozen ground but not until today a light snowfall arrived. Last year we were covered in snow a month ago and it lasted until spring.
I made s short video today, running an errand. It’s the 4th ride with the Volvo after the gasifier restoration. BBB :fire::fire::fire:

JO, what is the final report on the gasifier renovation? Now the fuel has probably settled and distributed throughout the gasifier and the system is operating in optimal conditions, but I’m curious how it responds while driving, how it works at low load?
Thank you.

Tone, I haven’t been anywhere in a few days. I think the video I made was my last ride.
First we had a cold snap down to -14 for a couple days. After that snowfall, and now it’s suddenly +10 and raining. I’ve been poking around in the garage, changing to winter tires, fixing some electrical problems on wife’s car, keeping the boiler fed and watching youtube.
Tomorrow morning a new set of workdays begins and I will have to light up wether I like it or not. I can mention a few things though.
First of all the lower nozzles helped get rid of the intake backfires, same with the occational sticky throttle - but that’s old news.
Secondly the smaller 10" ash-insulated firetube insert seems to have helped some with the hesitation sympthomes, but it’s too early to tell for sure. For now it seems at least the engine will pull smoothly on medium load, which was a problem during summer. I suspect that also had to do with the fairly big hayfilter leak.
Even though I’ve checked for hot air leaks several times I’m still a little worried about high temps in the outgoing gas. The intire unit is stuffed with rockwool to keep temps down in the trunk. There’s a spot in the drop-box area where a piece of sheet metal holds the insulation in place and it gets hot pretty fast. I’ve decided to wait until I’ve collected enough insulating ash on the inside to see if it might get better. What bothers me is that this gasifier used to run so cool. Maybe the hot gas is only because I installed the lower nozzles. I don’t remember if that’s when it all started. Still, I rather make hot gas than tary fumes.
Another thing I’ve been daydreaming about is adding hopper tubes to dry the fuel even more. It should take care of some hesitation steam as well as lowering the gas temp some. The problem is space. There’s not much wiggle room not to interfere with the trunk lids.
Well well, the Volvo is up for inspection in a couple months. If I get approval to run it two more years I may start to think about improvments.

That’s about how much snow we got today. First of the year a couple of weeks late. It’s Lake Effect coming in off Lake Michigan. By this time next week they say we will have about 18 inches to two foot on the ground. They are wrong often. I hope so for this forecast as well. That’s some useful open ground there JO. I think it would be a good place for SAAB to build the munitions plant they are planning for my State.

Tom, two feet sounds horrible. We’ve also been lucky this winter to only have a thin powder so far.
It’s a pity Saab quit making cars. I will never be able to afford a fighter jet.

Never say never, put away your savings on dino😀.

To bad Northvolt is in trouble. Datacenters are the plague of modern times. The cloud falls on the ground, literallly.

They don’t want you to know this…
Fighter jets don’t take keys
You can just get in and fly it away

Food for thought

Btw…
@Tone, have you heard anything from @KristijanL lately? He’s been hiding for quite a while now. We’re starting to worry.

JO, about a week ago I spoke to Kristjan on the phone, he didn’t have much time as usual,… he’s obviously quite busy, I plan to visit him in December,… here are some posts

As far as Northvolt, they were doomed to fail. They tried to do everything, themselves all at once.

According to Google AI, “There were reports of problems with machinery imported from China And by moving so fast, the company appears to have compromised on quality, leading to a high number of faulty cells that couldn’t be used.” The faulty equipment may or may not be true. It is too easy of a scapegoat. You also have a bunch of people that haven’t used the machinery before under a time crunch to output product as fast as possible.

They also had numerous safety issues. There is also now a glut of supplies and manufacturing which tanked prices, and EV sales growth has slowed. They also already planned on expansion into other countries in different regions of the world.

it is easy to draw up a plan, it is much harder to execute it. And they didn’t leave themselves any wiggle worm in case of issues which there always are.

UK Volt, also went into bankruptcy reorganization but I didn’t look at their issues.

Let me say that Kristjan’s father was younger than me, and I will be 53 in a month or so. My father-in-law also died that year, but he was a little short of 101, but he lived independently until he was 100, only the last six months had to be taken care of. At the funeral, the priest said: “The average person lives 70 years, if he is strong, 80, well, God has blessed Ivan (father-in-law) with 100 years …”.
