kristijan, how much kubic meters wood enters in your kiln and how much coal comes out ?
seems half volume of the kiln?
are you firing 5 hours with twigs, after a while sustained with pyrolysis gas?
really nice coal!

Kamil thats right.

Giorgio,
The kiln is 2.3m3 but l do not stack the wood, only on the behind (as you can see on the picture). So my guess is probably around 2m3, maybee less.
Well here it was about 170kg. And yes, usualy the volume decreases by half.
Correct. Takes 5 hours to self power, then it burns on its own trugh the night.

i was interested how much energy input - fire from twigs- is needed for charring the load…firing with twigs 5 hours is how i make 4 or 5 bathtubs with coal, what gives 600 ot 800 liters engine grade coal…

Oh l see. Usualy l cut down trees at about 10cm diameter. The trunk goes in the kiln and the twigs are burn underneeth and its usualy just about right.
This is BBQ charcoal. The larger and harder the peaces the better. Beter the price too. But for home use sure, the bath way is more economic.
However, char produced this way will have more ash, and will be of lower density.

my twig coal has 160 kg a cubicmeter approx, more ash from bark coal i think not, because all the bark burns away while burning, so my understanding.
but more ash as result of coal using, that can easy be true because twigs are mostly softer as wood pieces with core…

True, but twigs in general contain more minerals (ash) thain wood. Generaly not a problem thugh. 160kg/m3 is reasonable. I expect 180 out of a TLUD burning oak, and l honestly never weighted the kiln cooked stuff. Shuld be quite dense.
