Life goes on (original thread)

If you do it you might as well do it right. Were they bothering you?

Is the hole for the gasifier cut? If not how did they get in there?

Thanks Guys for the kind comments. I think she was the second most woodgas knowledgeable person in the house as I explained every part of the system in great detail to her while she sat in her easy chair. My wife would not tolerate such tedious info. I think I’ll try the mini-dachshund next
For background info: my family moved in with her in 1996 with dad’s death and my neighborhood had asians and mexicans trading gunshots. We sold for little profit, and got out of dodge. Ma liked the company and someone to do outside chores. We both made out. In 6 months I have to be out.
Can’t have a wood stove in the garage for insurance reasons being verified by the realtor. That means that I will work back there in the cold, come into the house and warm up my fingers with warm water, then go back out. Did this when I was a teenager, so I know it works. Next winter-firewood!.

Only at the Keith house… that’s really pretty clever Wayne. Just don’t take the corners too fast.

Doug, have you considered taking up blacksmithing, then you get to have a cozy coal fire and red hot metal to warm your fingers.

Actually I’ve heard that thin metal welds much better in freezing weather. It might be prime time for gasifier building ahead!

Hang in there Doug, See you in a few months (hopefully) … Our stove has been running non-stop for a few weeks now. Temp swings are dramatic with this lack of moisture. Might make 65 or 70 during the day and frost at night … ML

Sorry for your loss Doug.
If this year is anything like last, you might not need firewood. It was colder in November than the rest of the winter. I remember my hands going numb from forming my cooling pipes. It was mild for the rest of the install.

Wayne, that’s a fine looking deer blind!

Hello Terry,

Yes you got it.

The son was asking for a portable tree stand /shooting platform for his B’day. There is enough room for wife and son.
I might even put a couch and heater in it just in case I want to use it.

Don,

I hadn’t thought about it but I can lock it from the outside and they both will be out of my way for a while

I had a thought over night that an electric hot plate with a pot of water that I empty out after each session would be a time saver. I now have an Italian .025 MIG welder and I am gathering components for a 120/220 volt plasma arc. Chunker is 3/4 there in that cold garage (can only imagine what house hunters will think of that weird thing) The bright side is that I have perfect credit in a 3.4% mortgage market. I just need understanding neighbors.

Making a new home to ride out the winter. I should be able to put another vehicle plus some.

Must be building season! I’m about to insulate the cinderblock walls here at DOW world headquarters. Block walls are only around R1. Got a great deal on some 3" isocyanurate foam, will add R22 to the whole room! Should stay toasty this winter.

Chris, Like sitting in a coffee cup :o) … ML

I just finished an outdoor fireplace for a customer that should put him in good shape to stay warm even outside this winter. He wanted a big one, so we put in a 4 foot firebox. He wanted a different opening so we settled on a sunburst effect. He and his wife were tickled pink with it, and now maybe I’ll have some time to devote to the gasifier.

Wayne, my neighbor has been working on his deer stand this week. He’d be green with envy if he saw yours. What’s the possibility of putting a small gasifier in there to power a generator for a heater? If you or your son “mess up”,it could be a great “dog house”. Happy hunting.

Beautiful, need to build a house around that.

Val, the sunburst opening is a work of art. Love the herringbone firebrick. Superbly done.
Pepe

Pepe,
Thanks for the kind words. I love building fireplaces!

Carl, The owner already had the house, so he built quite an elaborate pool with stepping stones across it and a stream that runs the entire length of his house to compliment the fireplace.
How’s your build coming? You should be about there hopefully. Looking forward to hearing about the “smiles” as you drive by the gas stations.

The wife and I took a day off and went on a fall color tour up the west coast of Michigan to Ludington and then east to Cadillac and then back down the center of the state back home. The colors were gorgeous and the weather was nice. On the way past Muskegon we looked up Matt Ryders place and talked with 2 of his helpers at Vulcan. We missed talking to Matt because he was out getting supplies. Sounds like he is pumping out a couple of gassers a week from his operation there. Nice small scale setup he has going on there. Saw the Farmall M he is working on and that looks pretty interesting.

Very pretty!

Progress update on insulation:

Looks nice and warm. You’ll be glad you did that in a month or 3.

I helped my son set up his deer stand today. The deer stand tuck is dead so we pulled it with the wood burner.
