Life goes on - Summer 2026

This belongs in the battery topic. Cant find it right away.

Turned of the PV this morning 9.30. Emptied the batt last night and now full charging. 60 kWh in the shop, 48 kWh in the house.
Full charging now, compressors running, EV charging. And getting paid between €0,20 and €0,50. Haha, as I write this a 50 A fuse 400 V blows.

Crazy times. PV rules . Woodpower for the dark months.

PV rules indeed.

impressive system you have there.
50 amperes at 400 volts sounds pretty scary - must be big fat arc at fuse popping. ))

i get only around .06 euros per kwh at current bitcoin price.
plus some heat.
and noise.

Careful fellows bad-mouthing wood-for-power.

Comparisons.
PV really only produces seasonally too. Stores shortly before being consumed up. Is at the levels you are both doing it requires a lot of intelligent thinking smarts. And huge up front monetary; and time/efforts investments. And to get your year around power needs satisfied, worst of all for many of us - requires you to be grid-tied. With all of the obligations for most us of Inspectors; Permits; money consuming then mandatory Insurances. Aint anywhere close to being Free in any sense. At any level.

Wood-for-power is actually being solar converted stored in the trees and brush in the high PV potential times. Then can be stored as “Live-standing”; or harvested cut/processed stored under dry cover for a few years as will be needed.
You CAN Grid-demands disconnect.
The fabrication welding to set up; skull-sweating engineering for wood-for-power is in comparison much, much less. Much more readably done with simple maths. By an ordinary, common man/woman. Not an engineer level type person.
AND the personal health benefits from wood-for-power makes a fellow live a lot longer. No gym workouts needed.
Yes. For wood-for power to actually be workable; you need your own property with growing trees.
And THAT is the whole starting point to ever being able to have personal freedom and independence.
Why all of my blood-line relatives walked away from the old-World with its class-systems generational obligations, and came to the New-World. Able to then actually acquire, and own their own land. Own their own house.

In truth the best home system would be incorporating some of both.
Yodeling exclusively one; versus the other; is myopic short-sighted. With some wind/hydro on the side even, if possible.
Redundancy. Is always the best long term solution.

Amen.

And the work for pv isnt that much. Financial either, it isnt getting cheaper then now. Dont know anything about on off grid on your site. Here it is up to the person, whatever you want. No permits, insurance whatever.

Joep,
Don’t you use the Solarman Business app? It’s the app that was recommended to me for Deye.

Same here, full battery and with home automation, a heating element automatically kicks in to heat the water for the central heating.
The car is charged too…

I’ll probably go off-grid this year, but the Belgian government will surely introduce a tax or some other measure to make us pay.

Springtime needful things.
All of the grasses are growing now. Weeds coming on next. Mow, mow, mow. And must be up to 12 hours on the HD FS240 Stihl string brush&weeds whacker. Here at home, and at the Grange community property. Premium gasoline mix and Oregon brand Gator line gets acres of drainage ditches, hillside embankments and fence lines done. Ibuprofen for me.

I am training the Taiwan exchange girl on the rider mower now. A big city girl but willing to learn. Attentive; and follows directions well.
Given the chance she could be this girl:

S.U.

I’m sure you gave her a rigorous safety lesson Steve. But it reminds me of a story from the late '70s. There are a bunch of specialized high schools in New York City. Science, the performing arts and others which students can apply to instead of their neighborhood schools. My sister chose to go to the agriculture specializing school. (Go figure in NYC). Going there meant the students had to spend their summer vacation working on farms in rural NY State. One girl never made it back to the city. Apparently she overturned the tractor she was driving on the farm. Granted yours is just a riding mower, but mixing city folk with tractors, chainsaws and the like is just asking for trouble.
Personally, I find those things safer than walking down some streets in NYC, but that’s just me.

That is a huge system 30kw? How much does it pull in during the winter for you? I know it isn’t much because you are up by santa claus.

First of all, all the guys here inspired me to build this way. In particular Matt , who is living most or all the time off grid. Not my intention but it must be possible. The centre in his system are the batteries. I was to focussed on the generator, but it are the batteries and inverter. There are four diy now and one waiting for assembly. Tone showed some interest some time ago and I decided to post some, not to show of but to show you can create some serious power.
I got into contact with someone that filled his pockets with crypto and wanted to play energycompany. Funny story, he uses the same components as me except for the batteries and sells it for the price I cant buy, installation included. That is the 48 kWh system in the house. It comes with a two year contract, so after that I am free to do what I want. The contract uses the dynamic prices and is the only one in Holland that operates with batteries on the frequency market. Plan is to put it all together then in the shop. Eventually it will be 3 times 12 kW inverter and the batteries 100 or 200 kWh. The laser takes 100-150 kWh a day so we really need this big system. PV is producing 150+ kWh a day too.
For the moment I use Home Assistant and Solar Assistant for connection and a little steering manually.

Some spring-greetings from our local country fair.
Nice, warm day yesterday, summer temperatures.
We ran some old engines and equipment as usual.

Setting up some stuff on our spot.

The blue “box” is a vintage wood-splitter, pretty dangerous, but highly efficient.

There are a splitting anvil on both sides, for two operators.
The sign says: watch your hands! Safety precautions enough.

Here is one of the axes.
Powered by a “Krimo” hot-bulb engine.

Buzz-saw powered by Bolinders hot-bulb engine.

Some chainsaws to complete the “firewood-theme”

Look at these sawdust (chips) new 1/2 chain!

Me and a friend showed… yes!; chainsaws!

Whats left is going to become fuel

Well I haven’t seen anyone try to use sawdust in gasifier in a long while. Looks like you had a lot of fun!

I was cleaning up around the outside floorbeams that I painted with hopper tar from JO last fall and came across this, I guess mother nature agrees that gasification is pretty natural
