Life goes on - Winter 2024

These Haulmark LED lights are $9.99 (Harbor Freight) and you can get a insurance policy on them . They are guaranteed even if you cut the connector off, and put Wagos on them.
I am plowing every few hours now. The lake effect machine is switched ON.

Been a long time since I found any fun in snow at all. Just sore muscles. Snow finally hit us as well. A little over a foot since yesterday and a system coming in tomorrow night. 50 miles northeast of us they have 43 inches with more coming. Wet and heavy. I’m not interested in any kind of competition. Thaw coming this weekend for two days and then it will all turn to ice. Oh well, when the going gets tough the tough get going.

Keewanau got dumped on. This is the first time in long time, I want to say like 15 years, we got snow around t-day that stuck for longer then a day. We had snow a couple of times but it melted then went back to the 40s.

Keweenaw County is doing fine. I am on the Houghton County/Keweenaw County line. We have had some easy livin’ the last few years. This lake effect is normal. I am getting caught up on chores. I think I will put a ham radio in the plow buggy because I spend a lot of time in there. It’s getting easier though, as the ground is freezing finally.
No sun, no wind. Just generators.
You know you are wealthy when you buy a six pack of carburetor cleaner, so you can use the straws to spray fuel on the kindling, to light the fires.
I have an oil burning stove I have been building. I copied that Gerry’s DYI idea. I bought an electric start generator to run the welder, to finish the stove. This is the year, fellas!

Braaaap!

I thought I read keweenaw got 43" but that might have been in the Keweenaw paper talking about gaylord. It makes me sad, we used to have property right there.

Two days of air-inversion freezing fog here. Always few few degrees below 0C/32F.
Makes for slick driving transitioning in and out of zone pockets.

I hate to say this but white-on-the-ground is prettier.

I like the looks of that Steve. We are now around 14 inches with up to another foot tonight and tomorrow with 30mph winds and up to 50 MPH gusts. I may just wait for a thaw and hope nature does all the clearing. I was really counting on that global warming too.

You want to borrow my snowboard? It finally sounds like a good year for a snowmobile
no one has gasified one yet

It’s a little different now. The building and the tower are gone. There have been a lot more visitors since 2020.

Late August is the best time to visit. No bugs, still warm, fresh food.
I like it now, dangerous, no bugs, pants are an option, plenty of skiing, plenty of snowmobiling, easy to focus on projects.
June is a strange time, everything is trying to grow really fast, sticky humidity, everything smells good, shorts are mandatory but everything is trying to scratch or bite you.
April is for fire wood. No leaves, no bugs, no heat.

When I was there, I think it was late Summer or early Fall. First time with my wife, and my parents, and Mother-in Law. (We rented a Chevy Astro-van, now have owned two of them.) We stayed overnight in Copper Harbor. Strangely enough, soon after, my wife’s friends from her work. who were into rally and auto-cross, were going up there for the Lake Superior Pro Rally. A friend of theirs, also racing, but in the top classes, had lost his service driver and offered that job to me. I accepted and we were off to the Keweenaw again! I spent a few days driving his van and trailer around while he was on rally stages, and getting lost in the woods, and snowed-on. One of the times, I flew my R/C glider (slope soaring) off the edge of the park road near where that above photo was taken, while a bald-eagle glided by, watching my small glider and wondering friend or foe? Great memories!

Hey send some of that snow my way, Tom. I’ll take it off of your hands.

Which do you prefer Cody. Sundays snow, Monday’s Tuesdays, todays? Got another nice load predicted for tomorrow. Really hoping that this isn’t one of our 240 inch years. Last one was 10 years ago. I was a lot younger then. I know 240 would be a good year for Bruce but he must be way tougher than me. My tarp house that I store a couple gasifiers under was on the verge of collapsing. I had to wade out and get the snow pulled off that. Pretty sure it wouldn’t have been standing tomorrow.

DO they know you have wood burner, gasifier on the back, or don’t they ask.

Hi Kevin, yes, many ask what it is, also many recognize it, from old movies, and grandparents stories.
As the woodgas was so much used in Europe during ww2, it’s no trouble explaining (mostly).
Three weeks ago a oncoming police car did a u-turn, following me through the small town where i work, i parked at a supermarket parking, get out of my car, and smiled at them, they just glared at me, then drove away with almost spinning tires
 i wonder what they expected?

Haha, that’s funny. Obviously they weren’t looking for you
My personal experience is they are genuinly interested in gasification. At least no complaints so far

Well, im pretty sure they checked my car on their computer, no remarks-no fun
They also looked much as trainees, and they are often interested in showing their growing authority

Hi All
My four Group 31T lead acid batteries to-be-banked in this picture. One under the black tarp’ed covered John Deere/Yanmar 950 tractor.
My stored treated at least 90 gallons US, of generators gasoline fuel in the sealed, sun protected vehicles tanks.

I smartened up this year and have them clustered in the sunniest spot (when the sun shines); a heavy extension cord from the shop for no-gasoline used; batteries charge maintaining.

Make simple solutions. See. Do. Solutions. Doing keeps a fellow getting up and moving around out in the real; versus the artificial, virtual world.
