Mercedes-Benz E230 vol. 2, charcoal powered

Kristijan, maybe you should start thinking about lighting a big stack ones a year. In the woods around here there are still traces of stacks from WW2 charcoal production. This video shows a bunch enthusiasts tearing down a stack, grinding and sacking.

Be wery carefull posting that kind of videos here JO! You know porn videos are prohibited here

Joke to the side, those guys did a amazeing job. You can hear the char is of wery high quality. But do they have any other videos of how they set a stalk? Such quality “ringing” chat is rare to see from a earth stalk.

Ha, there are patches of black soil in forests where l was born too, from centurys of char making.

As I understand the wood is not allowed to burn once the wood stack is properly lit in the center. Requires constant attention for several days. Any flame that pops up is banged on and/or covered with more dirt and even watered.

This is the stack they started off with. You should get suggestions of better videos of how the stack is built up or search for “kolmila” - if you want Swedish charcoal stacks

Such sistems are traditional here too. Its interasting however that the char in the video “rings”. This indicates a wery high internal temperature, hard to acheave just with smoldering. Thats why l thod there is something more to it.
Perhaps it has something to do with the mass of it? I mean the pile is HUGE!

One thing they never show is how the char is cooled down in such a stalk. In my experiances, a big enough mass of char with just traces of air will slowly burn like forever.
I know they quenched it in water here, dried on the sun later. But that was blacksmith charcoal, not so picky on moisture

The couple of thing i did notice were the flames coming from the charcoal on the BBQ’s and the very little dust that was coming from the grinder/shredder means that i wont be able to sneak into the Forrest for free engine fuel as i think it may be a bit too tarry for me , but i bet it makes amazing grilled steaks .

I like this video, it show the whole process of it.

Dave one part of the video shows a guy putting “wood” into the BBQ. That is where that flame was coming from TomC

Thank you ramjet; My wife called me for supper 45 minutes ago but I couldn’t leave the video, so now she has cleaned up the table TomC

I was so hungry Tom, I pushed the pause button, just finish up with the video, loved it so cool how they did that hole process.
Thanks @ramjet, Roger for sharing it.

That is the most amazing charcoal vid I’ve ever seen, thanks for posting. I can’t believe those horses struggling pulling those sleds through all that snow. I’ll never complain about my winters again! WoW!

Not embarrassing, JO. Most of us didn’t understand a word that was being said. TomC

Hi Krisitjan,

happy new year! Hope father Christmas brought a huge bag of charcoal for you
Wow, I missed a lot in a couple of days. Great to see your Mercedes running so well now! Thanks for the videos.
I can totally understand that you decided to stay with EGR for simplicity now with the better performance.
From my armchair point of view, it would be interesting to compare top speed with only EGR and with only steam injection.
Maybe one day if you have the time for some test runs?

That is just way to cool Kristijan, how you have your chargas trottle working first, and then your fuel trottle coming in for extra power if needed. It seems this will work on any TBI or Carburetor car or truck, just need to bring the chargas in below the TBI or Carburetor and hook linkage up to do the same that you are doing. I like it. Great job on the build and designing work and development as you did this build. Started with a wood gasifier and ended up with a Charcoal gasifier.

It’s always nice to take a ride in another country. Running great, Krisitjan, loved that acceleration bit, impressive. I saw the guy ahead of you whack a cat at 41 sec. Thanks for posting.

Wow! A couple of years ago no one thought that you could drive a woodgas powered vehicle with such little extra effort. It has come in steps; first just turning the fuel pump on and off to feed some petro, then the rheostat to control petro feed, then the PWM to replace the rheostat, now this super design on linkage that allows the gas pedal to do all the changes. Just an outstanding job on your part. Congratulation on being a “leader”.
By the way, I studied several Youtubes on making water glass. The one thing I learned was; in college we affectionately referred to “chemical engineering students” as “cook book engineers”. The Youtubes sure clarified why that was. TomC

Haha, now we’re talking! Classy!
The MB seems to run like a dream, your throttle mecanism works like a dream, your wife’s camera works like a dream and your weather looks like a summer dream.
Myself I’m ratteling around on ice covered wash board roads in the dark, converting tary smoke. Not fair.

Thank you, that was a really pleasant DOW to watch.

Oh, I heard no shhh
. How did the air valve solution turn out?

Hi Til,

Happy new year to you too!

Yes but l need a steam boiler or water mistifier becouse with a few mm of slag on the nozzles the nozzle pipe is too cool to boil enough water. I am interasted in the difference too.

Bob, the only thing nessesery is the original flap shuts 100%, otherwise yes this wuld be ideal for a carburator engine!

Tom, the specific rare K-jetronic injection on this car was a pain at first but a blessing now.
Haha yes we were called “cooks” in highschool. Mixing stuff and dressed in white

JO, dont be fulled by the sunny weather. Its mud outside at every footstep. Went for some rebak chunks in me wood shed yesterday, parked the car and trailer in a level hayfeald, loaded 7 sacks and culdnt driveoff anymore. Took me a hour to get the car out, dirty as a tank.
I much preffer sunny weather with no snow and frozen groung in winter. but now lm picky
Ha, thank you for reminding. Forgot about it.
Since l not ever moved the air valve, l just moved the air valve in the engine compartment and set it permanently. I actualy have no control of it at drivers seat. I only added a gas off flap to close the gas if running only dino.
Allso, l always hybrid at idle! I shuld make 2 bypasses if l wanted to idle on 100% char, and idle controling sistem and things got complucated. I remember Waynes words from the book “dont be a purist”. This way the idle speed is always low and exact, with no danger of stalling, in expense of a few drops of petrol.
