Wood Powered Caddy

Info Tom, I don’t have one but I will be looking now that I know / realize air compressors have to use them because they need to start under load, very good info, thanks.

Found this old Limo for sale, it’s pretty ruff and I haven’t been able to look under the hood or talk to owner but I think the price is right, sign says make offer, the owner is going to call! We will see!!!
Something I like about luxury cars on wood, I don’t think I ever had more fun then when I gave rides almost all day on Woodwards “fiends and neighbors” day a few weeks ago, a business man downtown said he would like me to park it by his business like on a wed with a sign saying “start up demo and rides on sat afternoons” to help with business sooooo we will see, I think it would be fun!

Hey Herb,
I ordered those parts for the foot pedal for you. I will have it assembled for you, if you will just email your address to me. Call it a ‘get well gift’.

Good morning Herb . I like it , please save me a seat . !

It would be a draw at Home Shows etc.
Not to mention a heck of a lot of fun!
Good stuff.

I’m not going to turn that down, thanks a lot! Very good of you, I did send you my address and am looking forward to getting a package!

I’m not sure if it’s the drugs or if a Wood Powered Stretched Caddy Limo would really be a good idea! One thing for sure it would be about the strangest combo ever! With a gasifier on the back the vehicle would be so long the front would be getting to the desired destination and the back would just be leaving home!!!

Herb if I merge these two I’ll have just what you need left over! I been measuring and looking at the merger for a future wood gas truck. Ever without the wood gas it would be a pretty quick and economical truck. Last year I had a summers {6200 miles}average fuel mileage, by the cars computer, of 27.9MPG.Not running it any more due to electric brake booster motor out and discontinued.

With a limo that size you could fill the back seats with fuel to get you to Argos. no trailer needed

Hi Herb,

Looks like the makings of a memorable project, we could all ride in it at once! I’ll probably have some extra 2" trash pump suction hose that you’ll surely need to travel all the way up the length of that baby…

Rick

Jim that looks like a pretty slick old Caddy, maybe we could get together on some parts, haven’t heard from the owner of the limo, I think he may be in jail! What do you have in mind as far as merging that pickup and Caddy?
Wes you’re right a lot of wood / fuel could fit in there, one time I had big plans of driving mine to my brothers in Kansas and had about 400lbs loaded in the truck and on the rear floorboard, I couldn’t get it started and finally figured out the fuel pump had quit working so I couldn’t go.
Yeah Jim I may need to get a hundred ft spool to do that one! Thanks for the offer. Latter

Hi Guys, I always had a dream of doing a school bus on woodgas and hauling some of these local biker groups to the casinos in Dubuque or Prairie Du Chien but I would need to get a different license and of course the license so they could all drink on the bus … etc etc etc … Fun thought anyway … Hope everyone is OK … Have a busy week ahead but I did manage to fix the cruise control on my black truck over the weekend as well as reconfigure a laptop that a virus got … The worm gear from the 97 cav was the same so I pried it off and put it on the 93 control … One nice thing about GM stuff … Mike

Herb I have been taking some measurements. Looks like a neat project to stick the caddy front stub under the truck. . Caddy power and economy in a lil short box truck. Caddy is real solid from AZ Seen a few winters before I got it, I never used it in the winter but let my daughter use it some while her car was needing repair,. Don’t know if i’ll ever get to it I have so many things going all the time. My current Gasifire wont fit that truck . Hey you a MSRA member, going to the ssfr at Branard the weekend after the Nationals? Mike Isn’t that great about GM.Parts in every pasture, I"m sold.

Jim I like the idea of putting the Caddy front end under the pickup truck. I have written GM a half a dozen letters telling them we need a front wheel drive truck. You know how little traction you get with a conventional truck in the snow. Put the weight over the drive wheels.TomC

Of a front wheel drive pickup, there is nothing vital to running a caddy like that behind the front seat except gas tank. I’m surprised GM didn’t spread the weight out but they didn’t, every thing including the batt is ahead of the firewall, I don’t know what the weight ratio is but would guess 80/20 rear, there is nothing back there except seating and trunk, that is why they had to go with that “air load leveler” system because if a couple of people get in the back seat the back goes way down until the “air ride” pumps up.
Here is a crazy idea, cut the back of your Caddy and put a flat bed on it! Would definitely need more spring!

Herb that was the first thing I thought of when I got the Caddy. Love the performance and the economy but I’m a truck guy. I think the obvious solution to most would be a trailer hitch. I’m a little different and turn everything into a major project I. think if it was an Eldorado she would have gotten the ax a long time ago. What good is a back seat without back doors anyway. Your Caddy was the inspiration for the idea but not the project for my first wood powered rig .I need to get on to the 75% before I know how I want to due it . Ash removal will be the toughest because it would be so low when I got done. Would love to see that A in Brainerd if you are a MSRA member ,if you are not and would like to attend let me know I might be able to get you in, It’s a great weekend of racing. food and camping. I’ll be bringing my 36 chev and trying to get my charcoal bike done but can’t pry myself from my gasifier project.

You may not be old enough to remember, but back about '74 GMC built motor homes. Really slick. Air suspension, Fibreglass bodies, AND front wheel drive. They used the Oldsmobile Torinodo engine and front end with small truck tires . A friend of mine owns one yet and belongs to an organization of owners. If it makes a good motor home why not a pickup. I think it would cut into the sale of the 4 WD. Up here most people buy 4 WD just for a half a dozen mornings when they couldn’t get out of the drive because of an over night snow fall. I have a 2 WD and I through a little weight in the back at the beginning of winter and if I can’t get out of my drive with that, I stay home. That is why a FWD would be helpful but might cut the 4WD sales. Let’s get together and build a truck with a Caddy front mechanicals and a wood burner. Take that up to Detroit and show Mary Barra what forward thinking is all about.TomC

those GMC motorhomes are nice but I have also heard that you need to stay overnight on improved sites. I have heard that wet grassy sites with a slight incline gets them stuck really easy because of the tandem wheel set 3/4 of the way back takes the traction off the front drive wheels.

Hi Herb,
I still haven’t received an email from you. You (or anyone) can email me direct. [email protected]
