Technically any engine will run, but some are preferred. There’s a lot of info on engine specifics in the Premium section.
We like the big slow revving V8s vs the smaller 6 or 4 cylinders. Wayne likes the Dakotas with a Magnum 318 V8; he’s also very happy with the 8L V10 Dodge Ram.

1995 Dodge Ram 2500 V10 Truck (OBO) - $2000 (Lincoln, AR)
I have a 1995 Dodge Ram pickup with a V10 engine in it, as you can see by the pictures the body isn’t in the best condition or the interior, but that’s why it’s going for so cheap. This would make the perfect work pickup especially being that it’s got a V10 in it, I’m almost certain it takes unleaded gas and it still gets around 15 mpg. It runs great and all the lights work including the brake lights, but the blinkers don’t but I think it’s just a fuse needing replaced. The heater doesn’t work and the ignition switch has to be started with a screwdriver but it isn’t hard, just a matter of turning it, it isn’t stolen or anything, it has a good clean title. The drive train is good and it’s got A LOT of power, it does need a muffler though. We’re definitely selling it though, and if you think the price is out of your range, throw out your offer, the truck WILL go to the highest offer.
