Gasifier Instrumentation

Hello Billy ,

Looks like ya really got it going on!!

I think I’m good right now but when I build another gasifier I may want to add a thermocouple and three lights.

Hi Jim and Carl,
I used a PWM with negative side control on my build and it’s working fine and gives me full control of the fuel pump. The black ground wire from the fuel pump can be accessed fairly easily by cutting it at the fuel tank area before it enters the main wiring harness. By accessing it here it does not interfere with operation of the tail and brake lights. Maybe this info will help others who may need to use a negative side control PWM. I also bought and experimented with a Reese Brakeman PWM brake controller which has positive side control, I tested it by controlling a 12v blower motor with it. It worked but it seemed to operate at a much lower frequency which made the motor hum and vibrate at low RPMs. I don’t know if that will really hurt anything but the negative side control PWM seemed to make the blower motor run much more smoothly and quietly so I went with it thinking it would be better for fuel pump life.

Gas sensors being auctioned at Lonestar Online

Anybody know anything about how useful these gas sensors might be? Description of one of them as follows:

“The PhD Plus portable gas detector monitors up to four atmospheric hazards simultaneously. The PhD Plus detector measures oxygen, combustible gas, and up to two additional toxic gases. The Biosystems’ “smart sensor” technology used by these meters improves instrument performance, and makes regular maintenance even easier. The sensors available include:
Oxygen O2
Hydrogen Sulfide H2S
LEL - combustible gases
Sulfur Dioxide SO2
Carbon Monoxide CO
Dual purpose sensor for simultaneously measuring CO & H2S”

And i caint tell if it is narrow or wide band, or what type of 02 sensor will work with it, it show’s the neg/pos/wires, then it says connect green wire too alternating 02 signal wire. is this likely a narrow band meter, or an older 02 sensor meter.

Hello Kevin

If the gauge is in the 30 buck price range I think it will be a narrow band and should work fine for the wood burners . I use the cheaper ones

You may have to experiment to locate the correct wire from the O2 sensor

Kevin

Where did you get it?
How much did it cost?
Do you know what brand is it?

A little more information and maybe we can find some instructions.

Marvin

The meter seller name is faverhk,I paid 25$ too the door, and the meter says made for raceing cars.the IDOM # is 301046652894 Thanks again on the wide band priceing , this unit has too be the narrow band.

Yep, The 0-1 volt is narrow band. Should work real good.

can anyone point me towards the cheapest vaccum gauges that are rated in H20? the ones i bought are mercury :(…

Good morning Joseph

These are the vacuum gauges I have been using .

http://www.zoro.com/i/G0813531/

Don’t feel bad about the inches of mercury gauges . I also have bought them by mistake

Is this the right one at a reduced price??

That looks like the correct gauge . I have never used that brand but the price is great !!

Thanks guys! Too bad i already mounted the HG ones in my panel… Oh well maybe I will just keep those and hook them up along with the H2o ones for “Good Measure” wink also the more gauges the cooler it looks to outsiders.

Here’s one good vacuum gauge for sale on Ebay 9-14-15

These are cheap and would work for the hopper.

I also found some 3 inch, 500 degree flexible hose for cheap. There are other sizes too.

Ooh, did you get that one? I’ve looked at that longingly… Let us know how it works!

I bought a dual scale aircraft gauge for $ .99 + 10.95 shipping. I’ll just do some benchmark comparisons to figure out what thermocouple is correct. I bought some nice hose; Flexfab High Temperature 3" x 12’ Silicone Ventalation Exhaust Duct Hose. I bought a SS 20 gal. barrel for $ 180 because it is so perfect for the filter. I brought it to a fab shop to see about welding on an extension and a few pipes and lid. They want $ 920 so, I am going to MIG it on rather than a nice neat TIG job. I just got the factory 1995 Dakota manuals for pretty cheap.
The Hughes intake manifold is not cheap but, I refuse to have a long-running hate-hate relationship with my stock manifold. I’m hoping to avoid mega-explosions.
I was looking for a nice inspection port. They make a SS pressure container for coke syrup that has a lid that snaps in from the inside. http://soda-dispensers.com/Merchant5/graphics/00000001/1000.jpg
The lid is elongated and you pull an over-center lever to realease it and give it a twist to remove it.

It takes 150 psi so, I’m sure that it will take a bit of vacuum.

Hi Chris
These units is available in SA for R 1500 ,About 100 USD
