Kursk 3.0, new kiln

That would have been something to see and experience :grinning:
I am guessing your safetylid is only held in place by its own weight. No spring or something.
Hopefully there is not too much warped metal when you will be looking around tomorrow.
But as you said, this batch of charcoal is probably something extra.

Just returned from a check, all seems ok.

Ha, seems we both do nightshifts today

Yes, but even with the event you had tonight, nightshifts at home by choice is better

I am on night shift right now at home just reading, after working on the back support for the Subrau gasifier today. Great Night shift reading of what’s going on in the DOW world. Pretty exciting stuff from all the things I’ve read on this Earth that we are living on. GOT WOOD? Yes, and lump Charcoal too.

A great run. Yeald was about 320 pounds of bbq charcoal and 100 pounds of mix composting, forging and motorfuel size char.

My char dust, sweat and mud filled microphone cant pick it up so well but if you put headphones on you might pick up a song that fresh charcoal sings as it breaths air for the first time. A simphony of light crackling. Starts after about a minute upon opening and lasts about half a hour. Interesting stuff.

Kristijan, I can’t help finding your charcoal enthusiasm a bit funny  But I fully understand the feeling. I feel the same with raw wood - the looks, smell, feel and the songs logs, boards and chunks make at different moisture content. Only a little less dramatic than charcoal making.

Yeah we are all a bit messed up here…

I was showing in a bit more poetical way the evidence to the theory l posted the other day, about incredible reactivity of fresh charcoal.

Kristijan,
I still chuckle at the comment your child made one time after you were talking about your friend and he said, “You have friends?” Then you wrote something like, “Even children know.” Yes, it is true.

Ha, thanks for reminding me of that one

Haha, I guess I was a little confused when I asked. I thought it was on this thread :joy: Not sure where my head was at.
Well, while on the subject, have you thought about harvesting tar from the 3.0?

Finaly l insulated the kiln. What a difference! Heatup time went down to 2 hours, an absolute record. The wood is semidry limbs thugh so my clasical fuel (green logs) will take longer for sure but despite that, heating the same wood wuld take at least 5 hours before.

Ha as l hit “reply” this happened. Safety valve popped. Emense pressure inside!

Wow! It’s a good thing you put in a safety valve. Is it just a flap that can be opened by a certain amount of force?

Things progressing quickly! I might concider killing the flame its close to supernova.

You can see it here its just a heavy cast iron 8" lid

Right about here is where we enter the “need for new pants” territory.

Kristijan, what did use for insulation? I see some kind of reinforcement mesh smeared with something.

Good eye JO. I struck gold finding some old fasioned mineral wool plastes at a neighbours place. Those l belive arent even legal anymore (no asbestos). Tough stuff but let me just say parts of me itch that l didnt even know l had
I placed 3 layrs of this stuff then fiberglass mesh and a thin layr of concrete. Once it all setles l might add a nother layr of fiberglas and concrete. So far its the best layout l had, by far. Realy looking forward to cooking and also extracting tar maybee even gas
