Life goes on - Winter 2024

The turbine blades made from PVC pipe are easier then carving the blades from wood.

Thanks for the answers, I’m happy to have you to ask, otherwise I would probably have bought such a wind spinner.

This video might help you assess your wind potential and avoid a couple other pitfalls.
You might actually find you have the right conditions.

yes, that is very good source of information, well explained and easy to follow.
did you carve the blades from wood?

Jan, with a small turbine you might be able to protect water pipes with heat tape. Instead of trying to heat the whole interior of the cabin, only apply heat where you need it - directly to the pipes.

You say it’s a summer cabin, do you use it often in the winter? If not, I would drain the toilet tank and get most of the water out of the bowl. I would then shut off the water supply and open all the taps. If you installed a valve on a tee above the shut off valve, you could drain the water out of the pipes. Then use heat tape on the supply line to down below the frost line.

Given the expense of a turbine and the fact it might not have wind during a critical cold period, I would just run the heat tape off the mains. The power consumption is quite low, about 7 watts per foot. I think most tapes come with an integral thermostat too.

Yes, the best thing would be to drain the water from the line and pump, but I have a wife!!!

“. . . but I have a wife!”
Yeah me too.
On her new 2 1/2 year old Toyota Highlander Hybrid it will now need winter ice&snow tires and wheels so she can continue to make it to her private home nursing visits.
Come on Dear, time to use one of the new improve new-generation stud-less winter tires now. No. NO. And NO!!!
If you truly love me you will get me the studded tires I have always used and trusted.

Still working on that. Not quite a Unicorn hunt. But s-t-i-l-l searching for available premium studded tires in her size range.
Nope. I ain’t a’gonna be taking off 65 series summer tires then going with a larger diameter wheel to put on available 40-50 series winter studded tires! That is going back-asswards.

Wimmin’ (mothers, sisters, wives, daughters), gotta’ love’em.
Mines; revised bathroom design;

I did get to pick the toilet WC. And the shower faucet (but not their colors).

Yes on the carved from wood . The first blade took the longest due to learning curve. The other 2 went faster. I thought I had all the same wood (spruce pine fir) but it turned out I had one piece of 2400 pine which was heavier than the others so ended up having to add a bunch of weight to balance it out. So weight your wood blanks before you start carving.

I had a puncture on the s10 yesterday when I drove it out of the garage, so I changed to studded winter tires, at the same time I took out the tires for her volvo, 2 looked bad so I ordered 2 studded nokian hakkapelitta, the only thing that will do for the wife.

Yeah, a neighbour’s wife reminded me snow arrived mid October last year and stayed put until spring. Still fairly warm this year, but probably not for long now.

Still haven’t run the heater. 81F Monday, 79F tuesday. 59F Wednesday but windy and damp. Going back into the 60 for the next week at least. I wish studded tires were not outlawed here. Of course I don’t go anywhere unless the roads are dry anyway. Wood pile will be up to 14 full cords by the end of the day. If the weather holds I’ll try and get 20. Mild winter last year. I only used 7. I’d like to see that happen again. Not what they are predicting.

Well,I guess this qualifies as today’s Boo-Boo.

Sometimes things doesn’t go just as you planned it, it’s a clear case of ”I will just quickly do this
”
After clearing up my mess it is time to call it a day.
Luckily I thought of making a pic as I was flipping it right.

:grinning::grinning::grinning:yes, everyone suffers now and then. We started like that. Stay calm is the only thing that can save you. We ended up whit a clean driveway and a few ibc s filled with wood. Rebak rules :grinning:. Four saturdays and the real cleaning is about to start.

Nice setup btw. What happened? No heavy logs ?

I learned a long time ago that when something happens that doesn’t involve injuries, just let out a massive laugh. No point being angry or sad, it already happened and laughing makes it easier on yourself

I was just going to remove the offcuts from the sawmill but I cut a few boards for a neighbour from the offcuts (he just needed them for a concrete pour so nothing nice) so I was just going to put them on the other side on the grass for him to pick up later, lazily chose not to put the support leg down as it was ”just a few boards”. Empty wagon, no support leg, crane with boards too far out and voilá, there you go
