Huh? Because of the turbo?
Diesel engines operate for a long time (when not fully loaded) with a large excess of air, so there is a lot of free oxygen, which at high temperatures combines with nitrogen to form NOX, if the CR is lower, the temperatures are lower and fewer of these harmful gases are produced. The next reason for lowering CR is, as you have found out, turbocharging the engine, a low CR allows for higher charging pressure and thus more power. Engine efficiency is almost maximum at a CR of 1:13 - 1:14, so from this point of view there is no need for it to be higher, only for easier starting of a cold engine a higher CR is needed for a diesel engine,…
Goran will probably add something more,…
I have a friend who races cars. He uses methanol fuel. He told me that he has found that CRs above 14.2:1 do not make more power even though they can run without knocking. He was careful to make sure I understood that this was without a turbo.

The hot and dry weather continues, the temperature was over 35°C today, in Slovenia we have a holiday called “National Day” and it is a day off (you don’t have to go to work), so I had the whole day for mechanical earthworks, I was transporting soil, an excavator and a very heavy load of stones. It was during this drive that the tractor’s power started to drop, I throttled the air intake all the way to maintain power,… after checking the system, I found that the cause of the problem was the plastic pipe connecting the radiator and the filter…
I would sit still in the shade with a wet towel around my head at that temp So far this year I think I can count the number of days above 70 (21) on one hand’s fingers up here.
Did the hose puncture due to heat, or just normal wear and tear?
The last pic certainly made poor Fergie look tiny
Yes. And not the first time. How do the brakes work on a trailer like that? Sorry , I am just a pizza boy.
JO, it really is very hot, when it is pulling a heavy load and the engine speed decreases, the air flow through the radiator also decreases, I think the cause was too hot gas, the plastic softens and the vacuum created holes, now I know that I have to drive in a lower gear and with higher engine speed…
Fergie looks really small compared to this load (trailer, excavator, dumper ramps, hammer, ripper,… approx. 5t), but this weight is much less, than a full trailer of soil,… and the load of stones is even heavier. Poor Ferie, it is never easy for him when he works for me,…
Joep, in our hilly areas the brakes are very important, well, the brakes on the trailer are very good, and even without the cardan drive on the trailer, he would not be able to transport such weight.
tone, maybee you can find flexible metal hoses…?
göran has shown one short time ago for his tractor gasifier…
Also radiator hoses are good for high temperature.
I’ve used EGR-hoses from big trucks, often replaced just because of some small cracks in the ends, you could easily recognize them by their orange color.
Withstands rated 360°c, and i have pushed them more.
Sadly i have limited supply of them since i don’t work on big trucks anymore.
But if a plastic hose has hold up this long i agree a radiator hose will hold up for ever.
There are also a type exhaust hose for boats i checked out a while ago, used for mixed fresh water cooling and exhaust under water, pretty expensive, but very heat resistant.
The heat continues, today the temperature was above 37°C, I was thinking about following JO’s advice (wet towel and deep shade), but there is still some work to be done in the shade… My friend Peter brought me a bone saw to repair, only the bearings were worn out. I didn’t have anything else, so I sawed some hard dry wood, which resulted in 20 l of motor fuel.
We’ve been talking a lot about the CR of the engines lately, and since it’s easy to change on the Fergi, I did it. I put in some 3mm metal spacers, which will reduce the CR to 1:12.9.
I needed some custom tools for this procedure.
I think recently Mr. Don asked what the inside of a wood gas engine looks like.
Another picture after the test drive, I stopped at my neighbor Brankot’s, who invited me for a beer,…
tone, the story with the overheated hose can be also caused from the cooler…maybee the new one has less surface as the radiator type…? also stainless is much less heat conductive as steel…is told a nice big cyclon cools also the gas.
i mix my secondary air in the gas before rubber hoses , so temperature is reduced also…
Giorgio, you’re probably right, this cooler cools a little worse compared to a radiator, but these days the system has been extremely stressed in extreme ambient temperatures, now I’ll be a little more careful in such conditions.
Adding secondary air before the filter is quite risky, because we have such a large amount of explosive mixture, just one spark is enough and …BUUUMMM, Mr. Wayne pointed this out to me when I was drawing some sketches of mixture preparation for single-cylinder engines,…
yes.tone, i know this with the explosive mixture…on my builds but is only small volume there, till now no problems…a safety overpressure valve maybee could help for more safety…on my fiat i have secondary air mixing after the big volumes of filters…
are you shure you have 37 degree?
also here is, how every year, a unsopportable heat, but the termometer in my workshop shows 31 degree…maybee you use a termometer( or artifical intelligence on phone) that supports “climate changing”, so it must show some degree more in way that people understand we soon get roasted when we not stop with all…
have some chinese termometers, they show a difference of 4 degrees each to the other…
for controlling the real temperature and termometers i have a laboratory nitrogen termometer from my wifes laboratory times, this is exact…
a lot of stinging insects also raise up with the heat, when working on the motorcultivator, basement and maintenance, it is a continous fight with these insects…also a number of hornetts this year i have never seen, though killing all we can catch (my son is expert to hit them with the hat) there appears always new ones…and this are queens what are looking for a nesting place…must make a trap like steve u. has built…
have you noticed different behaviors with fergie with new cr lowering?
good you have repaired peters bone saw, so the production of slovenian specialities can go on…the best sausages of the world…
Hello Giorgio, at work I work on the maintenance and construction of air conditioning systems for pharmaceutical production, where very precise humidity and temperature conditions are required, measurements are also carried out in many places where there are fresh air intakes. The company has a department that takes care of the calibration of these meters (at least once a year), because only in this way can we prove that the products were made in appropriate conditions. We use meters from the Finnish manufacturer Vaisala, or the American Mamac,…
I can control the temperature and humidity very precisely, I can also display a graph of how the temperature changed during the day,…
Fergi works well, but there is no big difference in operation, I have nothing more to change here.
Today I am driving stones and soil again, well, the weather is much colder, I control the temperature behind the refrigerator, which is about 50-60°C, which is good.
Yesterday I took the saw to Peter, I did the transport with Fergi, my dear wife also went with me, she sat on a bag of fuel on the trailer and enjoyed it, we drove about 12 km.
This is how the temperature was in the place where I work, at home the temperatures are usually even higher…
tone, thank you for the diagram…is this high temperature a new thing or was it also in your childhood?..
i thougt you have less heat because you are more at north, and you can make hay two or three times…here only one hay cut , actually is all the grass dried out, all yellow…
my son cuts thorns - blackberries - in the field with the chargas mower, when he comes in the midday times, he soakes his cap with water, this is a good cooling system during work…yesterday he finished at 3 o´clock in the afternoon
the mower works excellent though the high temperatures
fergie is impressive how he handles the heavy load uphill…i think also there is nothing more to improve now…but this is a problem for people like you what have the right woodgas spirit…only solution you begin a new gasifier project…mazda on woodgas… forklift gasoline engine , maybee with coal gasifier?..
I’m still baffled by the idea that you have a regular job with all the stuff you get done at home. I guess I used to do the same but now it’s an accomplishment when I get my shoes on. June was a wet, hot, humid month for us this year. Wet hot humid is my kryptonite.
