A guide for driving a vehicle on chargas

I believe in fiberglass filters, it’s the only thing I’ve tested that removes the soot, without giving so much resistance, or taking up so much space.
On the s10 I have about 1.3 x 6 yards, and on the ferret 1.1 x 2.2 yards.
The dimensions of the oil drum are about 14"x 48" on both, have welded 2 barrels together.
You could have 1 barrel 14"x24", and get in .7x 6-8 yards, which should work for that engine.

Your filter looks great Jan, no restriction issues now?

The new one I made for the s10, is almost no resistance in it yet, but haven’t ridden much yet, don’t see any soot in the cover of the filter, so hope it’s right.

Jan,
Thanks for the filter ideas.

Hi Steve. There are at least two options to avoid getting tar en the carburetor,
A) Feed the chargas bellow the carburetor directly to the admintion manifold.
B) Make sure to use well carbonized charcoal.

Eddie,
Thanks for your reply. I don’t think I have a tar issue. The problem seems to be very fine dust along with occasional moist gas forming something like concrete in the carburetor.

Steve, on all the generators over the years that have run on charcoal not one got away with being as clean as the carb Jan showed us , i have had to do what your guy did many times and scrape out the hardened mess , i think doing what Jan does and running the last mile or so on petrol might help your issue , and i also agree i think its damp gas that’s the main cause.

Dave & Brian,
Thanks for your input. I’ll work on removing moisture from the gas and trying to eliminate the extra-fine dust. Also, I am finishing each run on petrol.

steve, i have made the best experience with a sheepwool filter (how tone has showed on his tractor) on my small engines…in the filter train is last station a water irrigation filter from black plastic…on the black surface i can see every dust…since sheepwool there are no traces of dust. the volume of the filter must be - of course- related to engine size.
the wool from time to time must be washed with water.
useful in the filter train are several dust traps before the sheepwool filter, they catch a lot of dust before the gas reaches the sheepwool, so washing intervalls can be more distant.
light moisture in the gas is helpful for filtering,

Thanks, Giorgio, I’ll keep all this in mind when I make some changes. The cyclone removes most of the dust. Cody is going to send me some sheep wool. Hopefully that will do the trick.

steve, my dust trap, very simple- look at my topics of my mowers, motorcultivator and stationary unit, removes a lot of fine dust without clogging up…i think also fly screen can be used…it is made so, if one part cloggs up, the gas can find another path…without this trap on my mobile units - little space, small filter surface, after short times the filter were closed and power goes drastically down…

Dave, can you make a sketch of what your gengas unit looks like?
My neighbor is thinking of making a coal aggregate to drive an electric generator.
Is that something he can start with, or do you suggest something else?

HI Jan. You can download, for free my manual Generator on waste (on charcoal) or also call “Free electricity” from my web site www.driveonwaste.com
In this same site you will find other free manuals for different uses of charcoal like Motorcycle on waste.
I also recommend to check my YouTube DRIVEONWASTE were you can find several videos. If you know how to use a traslator there are mucho more videos in Spanish at my YouTube AUTOABASURA.

Hi Jan , Eddy , uses the same bottom feed air nozzle that i do comes in pointing upwards and naturally creates a volcano around the nozzle after a while and that also helps protect it from oxidizing away , my Hexoly nozzle has been in my 55gal drum now since 2018 , it is still useable , but i will change it out if i run it next winter , so many projects in the air i need to pick what one i will go with for next winter’s electricity.

I have being thinking about your powder issue. You may want to check the rubber foam system I am using in my motorcycle on charcoal. Download this manual from my web site www.driveonwaste.com.
The last rubber foam stage is a high density foam moistened with oil.
Works great for me.

Eddy,
Thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out. I increased the size of my filter housing today, so I’m ready to expand and try other ideas.

Ok, when you empty it of soot and ash, what do you do then?
Can you drive several times before emptying?

Hi Jan. I don’t to whom you are asking this. The answer of you question dependes of many factors. The speed, the higher the soeed the more drag of soot and powder out of the gasifier. The size and setup of the filter system. The size of the engine. I have three vehicles. My first system, the pick-up with the gasifier on the back, has a huge filtering setup because I did not know what to expect, almost never clean it. The second system with the gasifier on a trailer I clean the filtering system every 500 km (300 miles) but it could last longer. Both of this are showed in my manual “Drive on waste”. The motorcycle has a 125 cc ( 7.8 cu onches) engine with a one gallon bucket filter and it get clogged at 120 km ( 80 miles). This is showed in the manual “Motorcycle on waste”. All downloads are free from www.driveonwaste.com

Sorry Eddy, I mean clean the gas unit, where you burn the charcoal, I’ve never done anything for charcoal, only wood.
