I have a question about charcoal cross draft gasifiers.
First of all, what happens when you turn the engine off? Will the combustion just slow down and go out, and how easy would it be to start it later?

Once the engine is turned off there is no more draft pulling atmosphere into the machine. What actually happens is just the opposite of what you may think is happening. As a gasifier processes fuel its expanding that fuel from a solid to a gas. When you shut the draft down this process does not immediatly stop. It will still produce gas as it rapidly cools and shuts down and will push atmosphere out and starve it for air. This has no effect on the next re start.
