Hi Jan, on my volvo i close the primary air, and haven’t seen much moisture in the filter, probably due to the double walls, any moisture condenses between walls and fall down to the soot collector.
Never any moisture-clogged filter.
Ok, then I’ll let it⁹ be, then it’s what JO says, my filter gets full because I only drive fir wood.
Haha, did I tell you? I don’t recall
@Tone How did you build your unit Tone, you got a good result, it would be nice to see a sketch before I start with my new one?
Jan, he documented this in his threat. If I recall correct, there is no restricion because Tone uses a lot of small branches and wants to keep the flow going. And he uses his special bottom nozzle of course .
I tested the s10 now when I went home (the wife wasn’t there) 80 kmh uphill (50mph) and 110kmh on a smooth road (68kmph) in the second highest gear about 2500 rpm, then it didn’t get any higher.
Shouldn’t that mean that I have a little too little gas for this engine?
Jan, seems you’re in a real hurry if you want to go even faster than that
Yes, I am a pensioner. Apart from this, it would be fun if I could catch up with you, and above all go a little faster on uphill slopes.
But as you say, I hesitate, it works quite well, I’m just too cowardly to drive on major roads.
@Woodrunner
I have to clean the fiberglass filter quite often, it takes around 0.5 hours so it’s not a big problem, but you can drive as far as you like without cleaning.
What do you think I’m doing wrong?
Tested the temp in and out yesterday, 300c in and 45c out after about 12km and after 1 hour in the forest about 200c in and about 80c out of the filter.
Has approx. 5.5 m2 filter surface.
When the filter was new, it took quite a long time before there was any resistance over it.
Hi Jan, 5,5m2 would be more than enough, i can’t think of anything really, maybe too much moisture in gas, with the fine conifer soot maybe.
Is it start running slow when you decide it’s time for filter cleaning?
Maybe insulate the filter some more? So the cake really dries out.
Have you tried to fast let go of the throttle exactly the same moment you pass some bumps in the road? This drops a lot of the soot cake.
I need to get my vacuummeters in place so we can compare some.
Well, the car will run a little worse, but I can see on the gauge that it is getting tight and hear on the cover of the filter that it is affected (pling), then I am a little afraid that it will draw soot past the seal because I have had problems with the tightness of the filter cover.
There is no more than about 3-4mm thick cake on the filter when I clean, but very fine soot.
Thanks for the tip, but I have silicone as a seal there already, but I haven’t found a good way to counteract the vacuum suction yet, I think I got it better last time, but I have to run for a while before I see results, thanks again and welkom to the forum…
If I may post my view of this. 80C out of the filter is borderline dropping moisture out and 45C there is definately condensation going on. At least if I compare it to boiler exhaust temps. So I think, just as Göran says, to insulate the filter is probably the way to go as you have enough heat going into the hotfilter.
Yes, I have about 10cm of insulation, and a thick plastic and a blue plastic barrel on the outside, so it’s strange that the gas gets so cold.
Hard to come up with anything more.
Yes, that should heat up pretty fast. Can you get to the insulation easy? I was just thinking if it is wet, then it cools for a long time.
You’re right, I’ll check this out, thanks.
How do I get a tight fit around the rod if I’m going to make a grate for the ash that is movable back and forth?
Jan, I’m sure there are many ways. I used a 10 or 12 mm ss compression fitting (klämringskoppling). Filled with high temp grease and not tightened fully. Vertical and held down by the weight of the shaker.
Yes, it must work, thanks for the tip,
I’m thinking of making the grate tighter so not so much charcoal goes through.
Have you gotten any further with the volvo?
Not really. I’ve been messing with the new hayfilter to make things seal and fit in the trunk. Also, I need to weld a new condensation tank to fit in the compartment behind the wheel well. Lots of distractions though - when you’re right in the middle of old parents, grandchildren and work. I’ll be lighting the truck gasifier up in hour, for another evening shift.
