DOW Driving Habits

Cold and wet but warm and dry in the wood burner

Tried without cone today when I came home from the hospital, (wife was on examination).
It works much better without cone, but not good, I have to shake the car sometimes, the signal heard in the film says it is too hot, got a little in a hurry then.

Thanks for the ride along. BBB :grin::grin::+1:

Yes thanks for the ride. Can you give us a little explanation of what is going on as you drive— such as your speed and rpm’s, what gear you are in and particularly what rpm’s you are at when shifting. Is there some way you can record the sound of the engine? Maybe the vacuum and at what location the reading comes from. Same with temperatures. Don’t know how you are holding the camera, but if you could, move it around to the gages— maybe have your wife video the gages while you go through the gears or make air and distributor adjustments.
What Steve said about insulating the outside of the lower part of the gasifier, is good. I used just plan spun glass used to insulate a house. I had some sheet aluminum, I wrapped the gasifier in to hold the insulation in place. Probably about 4 inches thick before packing it down with the aluminum band TomC

A constant one or two degrees above freezing and wet for weeks now. Wood burner weather.
With all the recent info on DOW I followed @wobigtd’s advice to go get some pills.

Second video is just another arrend from yesterday. BBB.

Thanks for the rides. Do you have three hands - one for the steering wheel, one for the shift handle and one for the camera?

Don, I sometimes wish I had, but it would probably mean a brain upgrade would be needed

Good morning JO

Do you have plenty lemons ?

JO, that video got me chuckling. I GOT my Pills for DOW, Oooh what a relief it is. It cures Wood Gas problems when you drive, RIGHT. Next you will probably be in your boiler room with Cookies and Milk chopping up wood. saint nic helper, hat and all. Tis the season to be jolly.

Glad you liked it Bob. It’s not often I get a twist come through. Mostly my sense of humor get me in trouble :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

JO, In the second video I got a few glimpse of your speedo. Looks like you run about 30 k/hr. Is that right? TomC

Hi @TomC .
I have a phone and film with, so it will not be so good.
The car has an automatic transmission, so the change takes place between 2300 and 2500 in the usual way.
I do not have a vaccine watch, the only meter I have is in the wood container, so I will see when it runs out.
The distributor can hardly be moved, is too tight against the engine, I have destroyed a bracket, so I can adjust it about 1/4 ", and stuck it in that position.
Insulation, is probably not wrong, see that if I try to drive with higher rpm, the car will go better (faster and stronger) but I prefer a rpm around 2000, which means about 80kmh.

Wow Jan!!! You are really driving by “the seat of your pants”. How do you know where to start to check when “she” isn’t running properly? Did I go through how to make monometers out of a board and clear plastic tubing? And JO, I think, uses a meat thermometer that he bought at a box store over there. The old saying, “the more information, the better”. TomC

If it goes bad, it is usually leaking or clogged somewhere.
I usually start by cleaning the cyclone, if that doesn’t work I clean the ashtray.
It is a meat thermometer that I have in the wood container, would put one after the cyclone, but has not been made (lazy).
Vaccum meters and oxygen sensors are on the wish list, but are quite expensive here.
Since I have both wife and dog, with me most of the time, I can not have a tablet for vaccum inside the car, I think I will wait with it until I can afford a meter

30km/h? That’s bicycle speed. I feel offended
What you saw was 80km/h. Close to 50 mph. It’s the most comfortable speed cruzing along backroads with this truck. Just over 2000rpm, no vibrations and a relativly light load on the gasifier.

Good video but I’m really glad I missed the part of you in your speedo. Some things should never be seen.

Here is a video from 9 years back and hard to believe I am still using the truck every day .

With this 8,000 pound truck revved up one can imagine the fire that must be going on in the bowels of the gasifier .

Hi WayneK
3000 RPM driving and shift points.
A lesson here.
For those who can set aside desires/prefernces and focus on just getting results.
