Life goes on (original thread)

Wayne, you gotta be one of the most ingenious fellas ever. Why my sons bought their Mom one of those tree blinds at Cabellas but were gone when she wanted it set up, so you guessed who got to do it by himself…your way is SO much easier! An’ just plain cool!

Interesting photo from N. Korea on NBC photo-blog today. The caption was: “A truck, retrofitted to run on a barrel of burning wood, stops on a road in Hamhung, North Korea on Aug. 11.” Evidently N. Korea is using this technology to some degree.

Football season!!!

I was out later than I like to be at football games last night watching son and grandson play. My son Tally (64) plays on the middle school team and my grandson Austin plays on the Jr. Varsity.

The wood trucks get no attention at all in the parking lots even driving the big v-10 ram (in the background upper left, first picture)

Second picture captain Tally, known to many on the opposing team as “Captain Crunch”

Carl & Wayne, A lifelong friend of mine was in NK many years ago to observe the dismantling of one of their nuke plants. We do not have diplomatic relations with them so he had to fly to Bejing and then back track to get there. He sent me a couple of pictures which I finally posted. He didn’t send me digital so I scanned them and posted them. He says that the trucks are mostly coal powered as they have an abundance of coal there. There is a home industry of folks packing coal powder into large pellets the size of punch cans. People heat their homes with them. Military trucks are used for agricultural purposes as well. I will try to post a link to a video that was posted a while back but I do not have it on this machine. Wayne, we plan to spend a week on the gulf later this month. It is 1200 miles each way. That is at least a single hotel stop, usually around Tennessee or Paducah … I will get a calling card and touch base with you before we do the flip side. I would like to see the V10 and Tally but he is a busy fella now and Sue is a pill at near 62. If we can’t pull it off I’ll catch you at the next gathering. Sue and I haven’t been to the gulf since 2007… My birthday is Sunday (58). Happy birthday to you a bit early old timer … Little brother, Mike

Hello Mikie,

It will be good to see you.

You and the wife are welcome to stay here and will have you plenty of wood. You are welcome to leave the gasifier here if you want to drive the rest of the way to the coast on fossil.

This next weekend OCT 20-21 I will be in southern Mo. (Thayer) with Jim Hart. I hope we can have a little mini woodgas gathering. Jim will be planning the weekend event.

BBB

hi wayne
i would be interested in a meet i am about 75 mi north.

Hello Guys,

I’m only 100 miles south of Thayer and would love to meet there, but it’s the wife’s weekend and we will be in south Tenn. Have fun!

Richard

Hello Jim,

I would love to meet up with ya.
I think the plans are for me to have the truck at the GO Green event ALL day Saturday and would be glad to spend the whole day with ya. The only problem there might not be a chance for a lot of one on one. (Last year I didn’t get to sit down for eight hours, what a crowd!!) Also the truck will be hemmed in so we can’t drive.
I plan on being in the area by noon Friday and also have Sunday morning available. I sure would like to have the opportunity for one on one and to ride you around.

Hello Richard,
Sure wish our paths would cross. I plan on being in the south Tenn. Thursday.

Over the last few years I have worn out the roads Birmingham west and Birmingham northwest. I think on this trip I will be going thorough south and west Tenn.

time spent in Tenn. is like time spent flying–it doesn’t count off your life.

Hello wayne
i sure would like to meet you. it would be grate to get to go for a ride if it would work out, that be frosting on the cake.i just found a 92 dakota 4x4.got the fire build and ready for final fit on fire tube housing.ill see if i can figure out how to post some pic.

Carson,

I like that saying. So time spent flying in Tenn would be even better. I love it!

What do you fly?

Richard

Richard,

I used to fly 172’s n such. lost my medical. now I watch other people fly.

carson

Carson,

Sad to hear about the lost medical cert. But the fun doesn’t have to stop. Below is my baby. It’s a Zenith CH701, built from a kit. Great for extreme STOL ops. Off the ground in 75’, Lands in less than 150’ Light Sport rated. No medical required.

Here I’m landing on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico

Hey I have a lot of parts for one of these.
Nice work Rich. This is the first pic , that I’ve seen of it.

Kevin

The family was at football games last night. The wood burner (93 dakota) is in the parking lot. (Picture below)

Hundreds of people saw the wood burner but not one noticed.

Big smile driving to the game, bigger smile driving home!

Hi Wayne, Just wondering, Do you need to relite after the game or is it still hot enough?

Hello Jim,

If it is only one ballgame the gasifier will stay lite.
I drive out of the parking lot on gasoline and as soon as I hit the road I draw on the gasifier with the motor to heat it up. It usually takes about a mile or just over to be on wood gas.

This fall there have been twice that the gasifier didn’t fire back up, but I had watched two games in both cases. I drafted the gasifier 2-3 miles and realized it was dead but I was close enough home I didn’t relight.

Hey Wayne,

Did you ever keep track of how much gasoline you have to buy for startups and short trips for lets say every 5,000 miles but mostly on wood? It would be interesting to be able to say “this truck gets _ _ _? miles per gallon”

Don M

Good Morning Don,

Keep in mind we don’t have to have a drop of gasoline. The gasoline is for convenience.

When I am out on a trip in the dakotas I may use about a gallon of gasoline per 200-300 miles. (I plan driving about 400 miles today)

Around home working the v-10 work truck with maybe 20-30 start up in a day the gasoline consumption might go down to around 20-30 miles per gallon.

The miles per gallon that I CHOOSE will depend on the price of gasoline, the availability of wood, what I think my time is worth and how much of a hurry I’m in.
