Life goes on - Winter 2019

Jan, I thought you said you wanted your swamps to freeze for logging

Hmm, was out today and drove with the ferret for it to freeze, but does not look good, too much moving water.
Don’t you think I could have it warm at home and cold in the woods?

That is what this is for…

But then there is a lot of firewood that I can use for the car (if there is any):grinning:

I just returned from plowing our road before we are supposed to get another possible 24" of snow this weekend. I looked out the window and saw 3 moose about 100’ from the house. I apparently need a better camera. This is them walking away from me.

I thought you had the moose pulling your snow plow. TomC

What does moose taste like white tail or mule deer?

Tom, unfortunately they don’t have a hunting season on moose anymore. Right where I’m at, we have more moose than we have white tail.

Hi All,
Still whole house heating on winter picked up wheel barrows of fenceline cleaning up limbs and brush.
Ha! Snow tonight.
Have’ta switch to wood shed wood.
Cant push the 300 pounds of wheel barrow wood through that far through the snow. (30-40% of the weight being rain water).

Keep your home fires burning. Your families warmed. To keep your souls saved.

my biologist friend tells me the deer showed up this far north with humans as they cleared the forest. As our forest reclaim the land in these parts the deer are disappearing. The moose are doing OK. There is still a season here reduced this year though.

Bill, why is that? Don’t forest owners complain?

The Department of Natural Resources in their infinite wisdom believe if they reduce the deer population, the moose will come back. Their goal was to get it to one deer per square mile by handing out doe permits. I think there’s less than one per square mile now.

Well just hope you don’t get ticks up there the new ticks here are killing off our moose because they have no natrual grooming technique like the other animals. Moose will just get so loaded with ticks they kill the moose it is really tragic.

While the big HUNTERS were sitting out in my woods, freezing, I went to town for something, and 4 does ran across the road in front of me in down town. TomC

Reminds me of an old comedy routine. If you can’t get a deer with a bullet it is traveling too fast. You need to slow it down to and add a couple of headlights.

In Washington State they now let you take your road kill, home if you want it. I have noticed alot of super heavy duty bumpers with head light guards on trucks lately. It is Cheaper then the hunting licence, tag, rifle, bullets with the ridicules regulations. The trucks look really nice with the new proven bumper systems lot of lights to keep them between the head light. The state decided it would same them money if people could take their road kill home and eat it. Go figure. If you hit a elk or mooses it will end up on your roof and into the bed of the truck. You don’t have to even load it up. You Might need to replace the windshield. Insurance company will cover it if you have comprehensive coverage.
Washington State still leading the way in making another new law. People in this state have quit hunting because of all the laws and regulations. We have Deer living inside the city limits no Elk yet. But we did have a Moose in town last year. Also a Mountain Lion (Couger) in the city limits, he left his paw tracks in the snow out in the orchard next to the house last winter. They also reintroduce into the state Wolfs to help reduce the deer population. Oh yes people have spoted Grizzly Bears too.

Funny you have always had first refusal on roadkill here in NH but it has never been considered an alternative to hunting. Most people here find it is much easier to clean their gun them there truck. Here it is universally considered a tragedy when you hit something damages your vehicle and the meat is not very good given the violence of the death.

Moose meat is quite similar to beef, just doesn’t have the fat marbling. In Manitoba the moose have gotten extremely scarce, due to aboriginal people spotlight hunting for the cash market, a very dangerous practice.
