Life goes on - Winter 2024

This afternoon after work there was no time to deal with the motorbikes, my neighbor Branko (the one with the hat on his head) asked me for help in slaughtering the pigs, we slaughtered two pigs…

Got the first snow of the year.

It was about 8 inches when I got up to go to work. Decided it wasn’t worth it so ended up staying home instead. I’m glad I did, now we have about 14 inches. Those roads wouldn’t have been fun at all.

We are supposed to get some tonight or tomorrow

YUCK. I forget where you live Bronlin. Seems like it may have been western Canada. Luckily we are still getting rain. I still have too much crap to get picked up before it gets buried.

Yes BronlinK.
One of the more interesting and informative DOW topics was your “Cold Weather Gasifier Upgrades?” DOW premium side because of the asking for specific W.K. system modifications.
You generated some good down to earth Been-there, Done-that, feedbacks on that one.
Wood fueled gassers as a heat making system can handle life in-the-great-white; below frozen.
And with adaptations can handle life in the great-heats, water-becomes-vapors areas too.
Just like IC piston engines.

Yes it will definitely be interesting running a gasifier here. I live in Manitoba ,Canada. The storm we got was definitely strange. Here we got about 14in, but 1 hour east it was just lots of rain and no snow.

I took my truck to work today because it was the only one with winter tires and 4wd on the same vehicle. Running the gasifier seems to be working pretty well, but I don’t want to speak too soon.

Good morning DOW.
Life has really gotten in my way of gasification and even posting on here.
We love our lives up here. It’s such a freeing feeling of not living in the city. Being responsible for our heat and electricity makes us mindful of our needs over wants. We’ve greatly reduced our dependence on the outside world on a daily basis. I still need tools and equipment. My back is really bad so it takes me longer to do things than it used to because i need frequent breaks. It really doesn’t matter because most of the real hard work is mostly done on our homestead. 2 weeks of farmer’s markets covers a years worth of firewood, propane for cooking and hot water, and diesel for the skid steer and the backup generator. Like @SteveUnruh suggested before we moved up here, we are off grid lite. If we need to ‘unplug’ for unseen catastrophes, we’d be fine for a very long time. As long as the opportunity of making money with our syrup and jellies, we choose to live with comforts.
I owe our new life to the people on DOW. I had to change my way of thinking. I live over an hour away from the big box stores, so I buy bulk of things we need like they did 100 years ago. I build or make most of what we need. Its very rewarding.
I hope to be visiting DOW more frequently now that winter is setting in up here in northern Minnesota.
I just want to thank everyone here. I am a grateful man.

Pffffff, no fun, haven’t missed this white stuff very much.

This morning.

Even a pale winter sun…

Firing up for going home from work.

Fire in the… nozzle.

I’ve put on snow tires on countless customers cars, and wifes car.
My own daily driver? Not yet…

You don’t need them. You just have to drive backwards. The gasifier will melt all the ice and snow.

Göran, just i case you want to save on the studs - I resently found out winter tires aren’t mandatory on 30+ yo vehicles even after Dec 1st

Could someone please explain the logic. You must have to test below an 80 on your IQ test to become a bureaucrat.

Tom, 30+ yo vehicles are up for inspection only every other year, no road tax, winter tires not required (and with some effort they are very fuel efficient  ).
I agree - there’s no logic, but as I understand it, it’s the whole point of bureaucracy - it’s not supposed to make sense. In this case I have no objections though.

Edit: Well, I believe these rules are made to make life a little easier for enthusiast-vehicle owners, since there’s often very little milage involved anyway. 50+ yo vehicles need no inspection at all for example.
