That is great, nutrientdense homegrown food, can’t beat that :+1:
I almost thought I would see a venison roast as the last picture

In time hopefully there will be some venison. Almost got 2 elk with the geo last night evasive maneuvers were required

Oh, what a lot of good you have grown.
I got squash gratin today, she makes it wonderfully, yum.

Time to get a roofrack for the geo then, so it doesn’t drip in the car on the way home.
Jokes aside, I hope it never happens. Wildlife crashes are not fun, we want you safe

It is much better to use a bullet for them elk then a geo and a lot cheaper too. Do they have a elk season near you for hunting them?

Yes seasons opens on the eight for early archery, 3pt or better in my back yard. Several local units I need to look up the regulations, need to find a any elk unit to up my odds I would rather take a big dry cow that has done all her breeding for the herd. Can’t eat horns! Though they do make some nifty arts and craft projects.

If I am patient I would not need to loose arrow or bullet, they get hit on the highway regularly as we have a healthy bordering on over population in this area. In the 3 montha since buying the house there have been 3 deer and 2 elk hit. I missed out on salvaging a cow elk last week when the geo already had a loaded trailer of lumber from work. By the time I got home unloaded and got back someone else had already grabbed it

I’ll happily take a salvage roadkill

Himilayan elk? (Herilayan?)

That’s the one! And wouldn’t cost a 11$ arrow and 15$ broad head

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources requires a person to obtain a free salvage permit to possess wildlife killed in vehicular collisions.

How do you think it would smell by the time you got that permit?

We have to do the same here but you get the permit after bringing it home. It is just a print out from the department of fish and wildlife website that you have to keep on hand until all the meat is consumed. It was only made legal a few years ago, for many years it was illegal they thought if you were allowed to keep roadkill it would encourage poachers with big bumpers. That was never really proven to happen and hunters raised enough of a stink of animals going to waste in roadside ditch plus having super short hunting seasons and wolves and cougars damaging herds which in turn hurt hunting opportunities they finally agreed to us making use of them

Marcus,
It is amazing what you have grown on that place in such a short time. How much land did you say you have with your house?

.034 acres, and the lower piece where the garden is about 1/4 acre I get to use for gardening

That’s only horizontal. Go up about six foot and that space increases substantially.

There are lots of these kinds of sites. Mostly Asians. Some interesting ideas.

Marcus,
It is even more amazing that you have done it in such a small area.

Tom I just finished drying down the kale harvest that was impressive from a double armful of fresh picked to dry crumbled made up about cup and a half. A pile of nutrients there nice and tidy ready for soups stews and potatoes. Think I’ll do some spinach next

How did you dry it, in the oven?

Did it in the oven at 170°f, took about 3 hours it skrinks up massively then you can grab the stem and slide the leaf through your hand to strip it and crumble it to spice size just with your hands worked really slick

I’d recommend going foraging for some stinging nettle. In the open they call it stinging nettle and in shade it’s wood nettle but they both sting and have the same nutritional properties. It’s a powerhouse. And it’s free. WEAR GLOVES.

And what to do with it. We have plenty of them available. :grinning:

Dry it, powder it and mix it in. You won’t notice it in even things like mashed potatoes but definitely put it in soups and vegetable drinks. You won’t get prostrate issues later on. A bit of study is necessary but easy. The body is an organic machine. It operates on a fairly complex variety of fuel sources. It can be run on sugars and junk foods, but not well and not for a long time. There many things Americans greedily swallow that are not even allow in Europe. It needs a designed diet and it needs exercise to oxygenate the blood If you want to get half a million miles out of it.
