Wood Powered Caddy

Wifey videoed me putting my Model “A” away tonight and I couldn’t resist posting. It’s not a “Gasser” although back in the old days there was a “class” of “drag car” called “Gasser” and I guess my “A” would fit that class pretty good. Hope no one mines me posting a Hot Rod on this site, it’s kind of my first love, I’ve had it for 35 years!!! Herb

That is music to my ears…sweeeeeeet

Wow! That is a beautiful car you got there. Am I missing something or does it not have a radiator?

Yeah I always liked the no radiator “look” so I put it in the rear, it sits across the back under the floor on top the frame rails, coolant runs inside 2x4 sq tube frame! I like the 4" Blower Belt in that old 29 shell, I know I’m a “sick man”

Hi Herb & others … I have been through a lot of air shocks over the years … My 66 Chevy has a set the coil helpers between the rear axle and frame to support the gasifier(s). This is one reason I went to trailers. Just install a bumper hitch and some piping and a mixing valve and a few switches and party on … I ran my first trailer on on 5 or 6 vehicles. This second one has been on at least 3 vehicles. I try to keep the tongue weight around 100 to 150 pounds. This way I can actually lift it off without a jack if need be. Well, I used to be able to do that but need help now :o) … At any rate, 150 pounds is the same as putting Granny in the back seat and her luggage in the trunk. I look forward to seeing one of Wayne’s gasifiers on a trailer behind a Corvette. I’m waiting on that new cordless chain saw … Look forward to cutting and splitting a pile of disks … Many ways to skin a cat … Mike

Herb love the A . I always wanted a T got two now I realize I want a A. Them caddy air struts are only $ 110 a pair at o’rielys.

and it is very impressive, I’ve seen it work, I think you’re going to like it!!!

Trailers do have there advantages but if you think about it the back axle on these front wheel drive cars amount to the very same thing without the parking, backing and hooking up problems, isn’t that right?? They are even enclosed if you count the truck, and I do!!!

Hey Jim, you say you have two old “T’s”, what kind of shape are they in? Thanks for the info on air shocks, that’s cheap enough, these old air shocks have lasted 23 years, I think the Caddy deserves a new pair!! Herb

Did you say cordless chainsaw Mike? I have a couple of electric corded chainsaws that I really like. Let us know how long the charge lasts. That could be really handy for limbs and brush!

Herb, I like the rear axles on the newer cars. Only problem is the sub frame as well as all the stablizer struts and the such are designed to rot out in this environment in 10 or 15 years. On my 91 olds the horizontal stablizer strut that keeps the rear axle in place broke on a drive. Granted it was pretty rusted but it was made out of substandard steel and was never intended to have a rear mounted gasifer provide extra strain on the system in curves. I had to go back home and drive a different vehicle and leave it smoking in the driveway. My tires were hitting the wheel wells. We were on our way to a party around 30 miles from here so the hopper was loaded. I didn’t need to add extra support on that car as it didn’t sag much. The next day I brazed a length of 3/4" EMT in the u-channel junk. Eventually the front pivots rotted out. I started to rebuild things but came to my senses and scrapped the car… It drove right up on the scrap trailer and then I cut all kinds of crap out of it like relays and bulbs etc etc etc … Just keep an eye on things. I know I’m preaching to the choir and you already re-did a pile of brake lines but watch that rear strut.

are a couple of pictures of my old friend(s).
… Stay well, Mike

Plate is looking better all the time don’t you think? Just kidding!!

I’m gong to apply for a personalized plate for the Caddy, does anyone have suggestions? I think I can have any seven letters or numbers as long as they’re not taken in my state, do I have that right?
Please give me some ideas, thanks, herb

GOT WOOD

Herb both are unstarted projects. The first was a touring that was shortened to a 2 seater before I got it. It’s just a bucket with a windshield frame. the 2nd is a pretty soliad but far from complete 26 or 27 coupe. It was in grey primer when I got it. It was on the original frame with a 12 a body rearend and stock front axel. Nothing I would use for it. My plan was to build an era correct gasser with it but really loosing interest in racing and pretty much anything that takes time ,effert or money. Most everything I do now geared to getting prepped for things to come such as food fuel and defence. I belive time is short to get ready for the end of America as we know it.I’m thinking I may part with my whole fleet of collector cars. I was saving them for my children and grandchildren, spend the money as fast as I can while it still has a little value and try to enjoy a very simple life as long as it may last

Herb, Just put WOODGAS on it. I doubt anyone in Iowa has that … It hit me after my last post that your caddy probably has independent rear suspension so probably has control arms and not a straight axle and the long strut that the “cheaper” cars have … Mike

SWEM … Maybe I should get one ??? Naaaaaaa
Herb, if you lose a license plate here, it costs around 5 bucks to get a replacement. It doesn’t take real long either. Maybe it’s similar there ?? Obviously you can’t put the new plate on the gasifier without a special bracket … I usually mount mine off to the side and add a cheap light for it … Do it like a Harley on the rack … OOK
