Chevrolet s10 4.3

If your wife is driving, you might need to aim for 6000 rpm. Just saying…

The last few times I have had very little condensation in the tank for the hopper, I notice that I get a lot of condensation in the intake, the car runs strangely when starting.
I took things apart today and checked if there was any blockage, but I don’t see anything that could cause that error.
Does anyone have any idea what the cause could be?
Had a lot of tar and soot build up in the funnel down by the fire tube.
But I see that the narrowing has become a little larger, 16.5cm (6.5") versus 13 cm (5.1") before.

Jan, I think you will catch more hopper juice again after cleaning up. Dehumified gasses need somewhere to reenter the rising hot steam in the center of the wood pile.
My earlier inner hopper vessels used to clog up after a while and I started making the walls separate from the funnels - just sitting on the top of the funnel with bolts sticking out.

You may be right, there were fewer of the grooves left on the lower part, maybe I should have made more, the machine test had perforated the inner tube. Thanks JO.

Yes, I remember reading about that test. And they later found out that the perforated inner vessels didn’t work as good as they had hoped. The smoke kind of moved randomly and interfered with the much wanted flow towards the cold outer surfaces.
There’s no right and wrong in they ways we collect moisture though. As long as we are satisfied with how dry our wood gets it’s ok. Wayne uses external hopper tubes to increase the smoke flow and condensation ability. Somewhat more needed in warmer climates I guess.
I remember last spring when Niklas was here. He fueled up for his return trip with my chunks. They had been sitting covered, but outside in lousy weather all winter. His condensation abilities are limited to the very top of his hopper and his car stalled and wasn’t driveable at all on my fuel. Every rig is different.

Interesting, there’s nothing about this in my book from the machine testing, they just show tests how well it works, where did you read this?

I’m sorry, but I don’t remember where. I just remember they did abandon the idea because of what I mentioned above. Could be the Finnish research where they dropped a large snowball into the hopper. Most of what I’ve read are links on either “gengassidan.nu” or from the DOW library.

That was sad, I thought you had a newer book than me,
I take a lot from my book, and it’s good if this book doesn’t fool me.
The Finns had no inner tube at all in the one they tested with snowballs, they thought it condensed best with a single wall.
Looked in this book, they had driven over 18500km with this truck, and got quite a lot of water out when operating, not much when stationary.
But I know there are newer editions, mine has the smallest fire tube 265mm, the one on the gengas side has the smallest 300mm.

Tested the vacuum in the filter when I went home, one of the guys here in Sweden has made filters for his car and called this morning, he had 0.1bar and up to 0.2 bar vacuum and wondered what I was doing.
Mine is about 0.017bar at 2000rpm and have driven about 350 km (220 miles) since cleaning.
Sorry that I only speak Swedish in the film, maybe not a big difference though.

I’m learning Swedish from watching NHRA drag racing on TV Jan. Found out from the Swedish woman racer Ida Zetterstrom that Fart translates to Speed. It’s has a different meaning in American. I think that here diarrhea has more to do with speed.

Göran, my oldest boy is selling his S10 with TBI, a 2002 I think, do you think it would work with gas?

A few more questions, is it difficult to change the gearbox on an s10? Is it difficult to fix an automatic gearbox to an s10a?

I would not tackle that at my age. What about the computer, driveshaft length and trans cooler? Maybe with a donor parts car it would be easier.

Hi Jan, i believe every engine would work with woodgas, it’s just a matter of the amount of trouble/ tinkering one would put himself to.
I think here would be many that can answer how tbi would work with woodgas? With a fabric filter there would be just clean gas in the intake, it’s only about how the engine would react to the tampering we don’t know.

Do you mean replacing with a same type gearbox? That would’nt be much work i think, as the engine i mounted in the right way (no tranverse, compact, lift-everything-out)
Repairing/restoring the gearbox=no fun, if someone do it for you: 5000-20000kronor. If you do it yourself, a repair kit, some “tusenlappar”, lot’s of work, you will smell burned ATF and have to sleep in the basement, and some electronics/solenoids you have to inspect/test, so the work are’nt wasted.
About changing gearbox i have no idea, i know my s10 there was some electronics in the gearbox that would throw the engine in limp home mode occasionally.

I may be wrong but I thought Jan was talking about changing a standard transmission to an automatic?

Hi Don, maybe your right? I just think Jan had told us before he had automatic transmission in his s10?
Im probably wrong…
Edit: if he wants to replace manual gearbox with an automatic, i think there are older “dumb” gearboxes that fits, no electronics, just vacuum and/or cable.
Best would be to put in a v8 350 with th350/400, i think Summit racing had a kit with engine mountings and headers about 300$.
Would become a fast little truck, even on wood.

It’s the boy’s s10a Arizona that I’m thinking about, it has a bad automatic transmission. but an automatic transmission comes with it that probably works.
Rusty front and rear fender, otherwise nice, very nice inside with leather upholstery, done 180,000km approx, costs 6,000kr approx 600 dollars.
That I asked you Göran is for the filter, I think it’s difficult with a carburetor without this, it looks like it works with a carburetor on the iller, but it doesn’t go that much

How do you mean with filter? If the tbi gets soot-clogged?
I think with a fabric/mesh filter it may work, or make a adapter under throttle body, with it’s own gas/air mixer. Maybe. Just thinking here
Edit: what difference a s10 Arizona from a standard s10? 4x4?

From what I understand it is a more luxurious a10a, leather wood panels, cd etc.
But I won’t get any further with it of course.
Then the emissions exemption from the Swedish Transport Agency costs 3000kr and registration about 3000, tires, brakes, gearbox, rust, etc.
Well…
