Life goes on - Winter 2025

Congratulations Mr. @ Wayne on your grandson, may Jesus guide him in life, now you will no longer have to turn on the TV (where they curse), but your grandson will pass the time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Our world is sort of a mess, but the important stuff is still around bringing us joy.
And what Tone said.

Congratulations Wayne!
Grandchildren are the best gifts we can receive after our children move out on their own.

@JocundJake - it appears that we are over the winter hump
for now. We woke up to -25⁰F yesterday morning but should get to 25⁰F today. Ive been afraid to start the skid steer for a couple of weeks because it’s been below 0⁰. I cant afford for anything else to break. We woke up to -15⁰ this morning and I’ll wait until this afternoon to clean up the reast of the snow i couldn’t get to with the truck.

I feel for all you who live in the south. The snow can be enough trouble when equipment is readily avaliable. I can’t imagine what it’s like with limited avaliable equipment. God brings us trials so we toughen up a little more. I imagine you all will be planting gardens soon.

Take care everyone. Bill S.

What a blessing for you all. With a G- pa like you he will be getting a ride in your WK wood burner truck soon. You must of told him this already by the little SWEM on his face. No lemons needed here.

Haven’t been driving on real fuel (wood) in some weeks now, my fuel supply is all used, i have more, “un-chunked” wood, but it’s really no weather for drying this time of the year

Today i found two bags of dry chunks stuffed away in my military truck and as my “wood-a-holic” condition nagged on me i fueled up and drive around a little as the sun showed itself first in a long time.
So, jump in and take a ride with me.

Goran, ease off the gas a little, I can’t watch as fast as you drive on firewood. :grinning:

Thanks Bill and Bob for the congratulations .

Maybe I can take him for spin in the wood truck soon

Thanks for the ride Goran . You make me smile

Well, Tone, as my gasifier is’nt as sophisticated as yours, i need to “keep the temperatures up” a little

Another wonderful drive Goran in your gasifier car, and seeing the low sun trying to warm things up as spring is fast approching us all in the northern part of the face of the earth.
Thank you for showing your tar/water tank and draining it out. I need to figure something out like what you have on your gasifier. Your tar/water tank is close enough to the heat coming off your gasifier to keep the valve and tank from freezing.

Thanks Göran. First minutes of your video I thought I recognized the the road and thought you were going to work for me - but no such luck
I’m sorry to hear you’re almost out of chunks. What a misery. Unfortunately you live so far away I would be able to deliver only one or two bags in order to have enough left for my return trip
All this highligts another important factor for any newbie woodgasser - storage space.

Thanks Robert,
I was actually surprised my hopper juice tank had loosened up that much, it has been frozen solid for a while. I think if its placed where it’s protected from draft its easier to keep it unfrozen.
If it’s welded in place, it could be a good idea to put a small cap on the top, where one could pour in some boiling water if needed.
A simple wood-fired steam boiler (something im on to building) would do wonders, also for flush tar from the tank.

Hi Jo, i could “jump in” and work for you some, you could pay me with chunks
And Yes, the space problem is something to consider, and, also important, ease of re-fueling, a space close to your gasifier/ woodgas car parking. To just grab some bags and load them, on bed, in backseat, or in hopper. Without need to climb over a tractor, passing a narrow passage between engines and wood-processors, stumble over wood, tires, steel scraps with a chunk-bag on your back, just to do the same walk 2 or 3 times more.
I forgot passing a sickle bar that rips the bags, leaving a chunk trail to stumble on the next walk.
And: making good spaces to store chunks, only to suddenly realize they are stuffed with drums and barrels, iron pipes, old engines, and other good-to-save material.
I think im the biggest problem in this problem. Let this be a warning to you all

Thanks for the video Goran. I have been disappointed since I haven’t been able to drive on wood much this winter. I have tried to light it a couple times but once my blower valves were frozen. Next I found that some ice is completely blocking the gas pipes so I can’t even use the engine to lightup. I tried until my fingers got too cold

It is reassuring to hear I’m not the only one who is unable to drive on wood.

How do you keep your condensate tank from freezing solid? Your hopper juice tank as I understand it is able to thaw from the hot liquid draining into it when running your gasifier. But does this same method work for your condensate tank or does it just freeze solid?

Congratulations Mr. Wayne on your new grandson!

Hi Bronlin, the simple answer is: my condensation tank is frozen solid.
Haven’t even tried to empty it in a while.
It is pretty big though, so i haven’t noticed the engine drawn any water yet.
This would be pretty easy to solve, as i have my condensation tank under the hood, a simple bypass of engine coolant, from a connection somewhere, or from the return from the heater core would fix this, as i like to over-complicate things.
I’ve also salvaged hoses from diesel engine de-Nox systems, these hoses are special as they have two “channels” in the same hose, one for coolant heating the other channel as is for the fluid being “transported”.
These are useable for example remote drain valves.

Goran, I also enjoyed the ride and it did seem fast. Around here someone would be stopped for wreckless driving going at speeds like that on snow. I can understand Tone being uncomfortable with the speed, since he is used to driving on wood at tractor speeds.

What Göran said. Tanks are often frozen soild and if they are big enough it doesn’t matter - for a while. On the pickup I routed the gas into the condensation tank first - the hot gas melts the ice pretty fast and draining at shutdown works most of the time. But on the Volvo the tank sits downstream the cooler and is a lot smaller. I need to park it indoors every now and then.
I’ve found the hopper juice can take -7C or so before it freezes, but when colder than that it can be a problem. With tar draining I’ve thought about installing an internal electric heater close to the drain. Maybe something like that could be done even for condensate draining. There should be 12V “heat cables” available. They are usually only 10W/m or so. Should be enough most of the time.
