1996 Toyota T100 2wd 3.4L

Hi, I’ve been away from the forums for a while, I still would love to have a wood gasifier and or charcoal gasifier vehicle. I’m finally in the right space to start making it happen, I know my HP will take a hit when running on wood gas with the 3.4L, but I’m used to slow, I had a 80’s Vanagon with the 1.6D so I’ll be ok and better than that!

With that being said, I’m thinking of doing a charcoal gasifier for my first go around, just for the simplicity for a beginner, Any engines running on charcoal that are 3.4L or higher? Is it a no go for that big of an engine? Thank you!

hello brendan, i think it should work, why not? my crawler has a 2250 ccm with charcoal, runs fine…look my topic gasifiat…

Charcoal from twigs…simple, quick and effective without smoke - Small Engines / Charcoal Gasification - Drive On Wood!
brendan, i have a topic about making charcoal from twigs, the most simple and effective system, best are dry twigs without leaves - no smoke…no neighbours in exiting stress…some days ago we made 1200 liters volume of charcoal , one bathtub gives 200 liters and needs a bit more than 1 hour for making, coal size is ideal for motor fuel

Where do you find all that dry twigs? You use a lot.

Brendan, welcome back to the site! I have a 98 T100 with the same engine. They’re great to about 100K miles and then they’ll invariably blow the head gasket. Rebuild it with a MLS gasket and it’ll live forever. Very capable truck when equipped with the 4WD.

It’s not peppy on gasoline, so don’t expect much on woodgas. The 3.4L is kind of a dog. But Toyotas are basically bulletproof, and the computer is from the stone ages, so it should be an straightforward conversion in that respect. It uses a MAF sensor system which is unusual for woodgas conversions, so be mindful of that.

don, the twigs i "find " when i cut for firewood, or trimming hedges, how they dry? i dont know, how it happens exactly, they dry from alone during summer…

We have an Imbert style gasifier mounted on a Massey tractor. My dad used one in Holland for a number of years during WW2 . He built his own unit here in Ontario in 1986 and since then, my brother and I have taken it to various shows Currently showing at the International Plowing Match in Ontario.
