Life goes on - Winter 2020

This job was done through the saw mill. They sent out a forester to mark the trees they wanted and mark the property lines. He was a very nice dude and kept apologizing to me saying this is not how we would normally work but she insisted, meaning the owner. Every time I saw him he apologized. I didn’t know what he was talking about until they got done. The mill just hires contract loggers to fell the trees and load them out. Don’t want to beat a dead horse but maybe tomorrow I’ll walk the bottom road and record that just because I doubt you would believe what they did if I told you.

Hi Tom , thanks for the view , so are all those limbs on your property ? if not will you be allowed to burn them off where they are or will you have to load them onto a truck and take them home ?

For that amount of limbs i would be using maybe 2 or 3 cones so you can keep all fires burning at various stages of refill , i try and burn off all limbs between a certain dia range so they evenly burn down before loading another batch on top , i also found that the cheapest cones come from the old 3 point hitch seed broadcasters should get those at a reasonable price as most farms always have a lot of rusting iron laying around .

Tom unfortunately I would believe it. I could show you what it looks like several decades on if I was brave enough to risk walking through the mess here on one part of my backlot. I have alot of logs from pine trees that where partly rotten that where fallen and left hanging on limbs about 1 to 2 feet off the ground it made an amazing mess. Someone told me to just put cattle on it. I told them I valued my cattle and their legs too much for that.

She will be putting that property up for sale sooner or later Dave. For now I can have whatever I want on it. I have always been able to cut the dead fall. My buddy just used the property for deer hunting and showed up two or three times a year. Yes, I can set up and make charcoal where ever there is fuel. I like your idea about the seed broadcasters but we don’t have many farms around here that would use them. All orchards and vinyards. It only took me half a day to make the cone retort I have. Without the sliding bottom I could make just the cone mounted on a barrel lid in a couple of hours. I mentioned that barrels are cheap and easy to come by here, so yes, making more is a good plan.

I love that both of you are aware of the locally available resources that can be repurposed to meet your needs. All to often in our modern society people think shipping in new resources is the only choice.

Bob, my grandfather always said the sun reached a chicken step above the horizon by mid January and a hare leap by mid February. So, somewhere in the middle right now I guess
The calender says the sun is up 08:29-03:59 today, which means we already gained about two hours of daylight since Christmas.

JO,
So, what would be the sunrise/sunset times for your shortest day of the year?

Steve,
09:15-02:45 around December 20th, according to the calender.
However, we live in a valley and part of our village gets no sunlight at all for a several months. Our house is far enough from the south ridge though.

JO,
Wow! That’s a short day, and I’m sure it comes with lots of cold temps. Thanks for the info. I think I’ll stay where I am.

To the average person when a wood powered vehicle is mentioned this is what pops in their heads.

I think I have been asked how far can you see a wood burner coming

Good morning JO

Could that be the same sun that is coming up across my pasture and wood line this morning ?

I believe that’s right Wayne. Of course we don’t get to see it much in the winter here. One thing this site makes clear is that no matter where you live in the world, If you get the A-hole politicos out of the picture we are all the same people with the same interests.

I woke up this morning and went outside and thought, “wow, it warmed up”. When I looked, it was 15F (-9C). We have snow coming this weekend so it’ll get warmer.
