No on the laptop. I’m not even on DOW on my phone.
Bob Did you get my text?
Okay… @Chris Hi Chris I am wondering if this Friday Hangouts will work on our smart phones and tablets, or do we need to do this on our PC / Apple computers.
Bob
iirc if you have Hangouts installed on your phone it should just link to the app if you open it on mobile.
Hi Cody, yes the chat part is on my phone and tablet, but I logged into the video Friday hangouts and it worked for a few minutes and then it seemed to drop out. And I was just wondering if that could be used on our phones or tablets, or do you need to use your PC computer to make that part work.
Bob
If you are out to see America , Jacob, I’d surely consider Bruce’s invitation. Not a lot of places, if any, in this country like the Keewanaw.
Hangouts has changed a lot in the last few years. We were pioneers using it for group video chat ten years ago… Now there are a lot of options for video chat, depending on what you are trying to do. I recommend looking at https://whereby.com/. You can post a link and others can join without logging into anything.
Thank you Chris. It’s about time you give us all a little up date on the homestead and what you have been doing. Hope all the flood waters are staying away. Miss hearing from you. I know you are a very busy Dad now these days and working.
Bob
I signed up for the “free” version. Gives you a meeting room, so you can keep an eye on yourself… Assuming you are doing anything interesting to others, you can send them a link to join your meeting. Up to 100 at a time, no record capability, unless you get the “pay for upgrade” version. Fair enough. This is using my laptop computer and kinda slow DSL connection. Compares itself to “Zoom”.
Okay I have looked at https://whereby.com site. Yes it is free but has it limits. 45 minute Sessions but 100 people can join in on it just like the paid part of the site. The host, that would be Jakob would go on line and invite people. We then would join and through everyone’s own servers they would be okay to join in by Jakob the host. If you want to have longer video talk sessions with the group you will paid just under $7.00 a month. And you can cancel at any time, no contract.
Jakob you could try it out first in the shop looking at what he are doing to the truck to try it out. I like the part that you can just use your smart phone to do all of this.
The (free) part does not record your video talk or chat sessions and after three join in it is limited to 45 minutes. So there would not be any recording of the trip. This is a historic event tanking place I think it should be recorded.
One other thing is (cell phone service) could drop out and then the link would be lost. It would probably be good to also have a separate hot spot connection devise with you when traveling.
I think I can have one for $10.00 a month on Verizon plus the cost of the hotspot devise. Using your phone as a hot spot and running the video whereby session might cause the battery on your phone to get hot. Not sure if this is TRUE if your phone is plug in to power. It does drain the battery down more when using a phone as a hotspot. My phone is new and has a fast charging capabilities built into it. I know my old phone would have been not able to hotspot with the old battery it had.

The last few days have been very busy.
#8 cylinder started using oil in the truck and i decided to swap the engine. I had thought about a rebuild but due to the lack of time and equipment i decided to hold that project until after the trip was completed.
I decided to pull the engine out of one of my other wood trucks. Dad’s truck is still operable but my other truck is now a parts truck for the time being. I finished the engine swap last night. As we speak I am working on building a charbed in the gasifier for the first test run on the new engine. the new engine has about 126,000 miles on it so its not to worn out hopefully. It had been sitting for 6 months i put a battery in it and it started first try.
Also in the past few days i have been getting the trailer in order and bagging and sorting wood. here are a few pics of what i’ve been doing.
New tires and rims on the trailer. Chicken wore around the bottom of the cage to keep stray wood chunks from falling out . Fenders on the trailer.
Good engine out.
I see that ac pump hanging out, gotta protect that critical asset for a cross country fall drive!
Cut up 200 pounds of wood for you today. Should have the rest of it done in a couple days. You sure 450 lbs is enough? I’m so jealous of your lift. Actually your whole shop.
What I would do for a rotary lift. I’m glad to at least have a chain hoist though.
From cedar MI to Bourbon IN (Argos), Via Holland MI, is 300 miles.
If i figure it at 1.7 lbs per mile that is 510 lbs I am always over with that calculation so450 should do it. I would take a little more if you want to cut it.
We did mechanic work for years as our main source of income, most of the time it was out in the rain and mud with floor jacks, jack stands, tarps and 6x6 blocks. I have really come to appreciate my lift and concrete under a roof. They turn what used to be a hard job into quite simple.
The plan was to leave tomorrow morning but with the engine swap it has gotten moved out a few days. I still plan to be at the west coast for the 3rd and 4th of sept but we will see how things go. The plan is to leave Thursday morning. Some friends of ours came over this afternoon and helped bag some wood. Between the two trailers we got about 100 bags, most of the bags weigh 42lbs a piece. That’s about 4200 lbs of processed wood. I won’t be taking all of this on the trip but Dad needs wood for while I’m gone.
We sorted out the stuff that was too long for wood trucks and i gave it to my friends for firewood. There were two loads on my 12ft dump truck bed that we sorted out. Eventually I want to build a saw that will cut it efficiently but for now it makes good firewood and charcoal.
. Are you stopping by here on your way? If you are going through Holland to Cedar Mi,. Im not far off your path or maybe right on your path depending on your route. If you take the M37 up there. But im only a few minutes off of US31. You would take the M46 / Apple Ave exit off 31 and take that to Maple Island Rd, Then go north about a mile and you will be here. I can chop up some chunks for you as well.

I don’t think i will need any wood but if i can make it work i’d like to swing by and see your setup.
Ok just give me a heads up. you can message me here on DOW.
Will do Matt.
Bill those chunks look great. I see you got a little help on the bigger ones.
Have you finished yet? Do you know how much you ended up with?
