Wood supply

Hello Tone .

I shave about once a week whether I need to or not

Yes the tractor is a two cyl diesel and it fuel usage is near nothing .

I understand you. You remind me a little of this gentleman, who also grew a beard, a legend of this sport, like you, a legend in the use of wood gas…

Thanks Tone for the compliment and the video but I think the only thing I have in common is just the beard . My muscles seem to abandon me several years back

Wayne that’s what Tractors and Sons are for! My dad’s still pretty strong but he knows I’m only a phonecall away to help him out.

He looks scrawny compared to @Wayne and you.

The whole two cylinder + battery issue.
I was going to say, ‘that is why god invented hills and manual transmissions’ … but then I thought about all the times I missed and had to hand crank. However, it might be a fun Argos contest to see who can get it started the fastest cranking it on woodgas. (I don’t think Argos has a big enough hill to try the downhill method)

I wish I had as much dry hardwood as you Wayne I have mostly willow and spruce.

Jan, thanks for the video, you work hard, your Fergie also serves you well, just like Goran said, a good work horse.

I have three big lime trees out by the road. In February I trimmed two of them hard. I was afraid I was too agressive, but apperently not.
I’m trimming the third one right now. Half way through and firewood and chunks are alredy accumulating.
Tree trimming around the house is a pita. Half the work is loading and hauling brush to the woods. But on the other hand it becomes road material in stony and uneven terrain.

I’m surprised your limes grow that far north! Must be a special species, or does it not make fruit?

I was wondering too… had to google around, seems lime-tree is a translation of lindträd? (linden)?

As far as I know they don’t grow wild around here. Mine are planted late 40s early 50s something. Small berries of some kind develop this time of year. I have no idea if maybe a hybrid of some kind.
Göran - “lind” is right.

Sean,
No hills anywhere near Argos! There are some hills in Indiana, they tend to be near the rivers or down in Brown County near Bloomington. (nice state park there) I think there is a large, hilled-up landfill just south of Argos, but there is a tall fence around that! :cowboy_hat_face:

So we can do woodgas drag races, but no hill climbs

All the small trees I cut down last winter/early spring are bone dry. I hung them up like deadfall and left them in the woods. Nice dry sound when I bop on them with my hatchet. Dragged them to the carpentry shop and lopped All the branches off, most aren’t much bigger than my thumb in diameter. I’ll save that for a smaller gasifier, or to make charcoal with.

This winter I definitely need to cut down a lot more trees in preparation. I’m spoiled on Problem Walnuts right now invading the dike by the pond.

Some Sunday amusement.

Got some help from my 77 yo father to load a big birch trunk.

Small stuff fits into the motor fuel category.

Excellent video Jan that little chunker really puts in work! I was cleaning pallet lumber this morning getting ready for a fuel making session myself, then found I won’t be doing any chunking today

Lukcily I have about a month worth of chunks saved up and dried beneath the tarp, maybe 40-50 bags. Think I have a spare tire down at the shop I’ll bring home and swap it out

Ha, Marcus, as they say, “Sunday profits don’t go to the scrotum” :grinning:

Slowly and slowly building up my chunks in preparation. I have about 55 gallons of little quarter discs of wood.

Trying to think of a safer way to cut these discs out. I have a horizontal bandsaw, very quick to change the blades out. I wonder how well it would cut wood? The pulleys aren’t rubberized so they may slip.

Table saw is a big ask, and it won’t cut the bigger pieces that I have. Miter saw wants to keep throwing the wood or jamming it in the guard.

Maybe I could do something claptrap with my corded chainsaw but that would be a lot of wasted wood.

I don’t have the right large diameter pipe to make a proper chunker. May have to break down and order it online along with some heavy plate and try to chuck it into one of the differentials I have.
