Life goes on - Winter 2020

Bill, the issue is mentioned in this video
@Wayne may want to consider styrofoam Long Johns before watching it

Okay after watching that video, no more complaining about the cold weather.

It always amazes me that ā€œboilingā€ water freezes faster than cold water. TomC

Great video JO.
See? Where I live isnā€™t that bad. That guy was right, 35C is way too hot, especially with the mosquitoes and black flies.
Iā€™m curious how they start their tractors in those temperatures.

When they where building the pipeline in Alaska back in the 70s they never shutdown the equipment. My uncleā€™s best friend worked on the pipeline and would always say you donā€™t know what cold is until you work where running out of fuel means the motor never runs again.

I donā€™t know about Russia, but here almost every vehicle have a block heater, as well as a cab heater. Electric for the most part, but even gasoline or diesel ones.
In Russian videos it seems small two-stroke starters are still used on tractors. No need to mess around with batteries in extreeme cold then.

You donā€™t have mosquitoes or black flies? Where I live in Michigan it doesnā€™t get really cold very often but the bugs are a plenty. I was on a fishing trip in northern Ontario once when the black flies hatched. About as close to hell as I can imagine.

Jan, Iā€™m seeing poles which could be for powerlines but Iā€™m not seeing wires going to the houses.
@tcholton717, yes we have tons of mosquitoes, black flies, horseflies and deer flies. The chickens tend to keep the population down around the house. I now have a bat house and will hopefully get bats too.

Before the Alcan (Alaska/ Canada) highway was built, the truckers use the gas torches (?) that were use to heat soldering irons, to heat the oil pan of the engine. TomC

I watched the video again and and seen powerlines in the city. I imagine they would need to keep the block heaters plugged in all the time

Tom, in the military service we used to punch a few air holes in an empty tin can, fill it with hot coals from the tent stove and put it under the oil pan. We were afraid licking flames would make any leaking oil catch fire.

Two hours to New Year. First time ever wife and I celebrate on our own. Covid 2020 to an end. I wish you all a better 2021. Happy New Year!

Yes, Happy New Year to all.

Iā€™ve been running a small band saw and small drill press with a square wave inverter. They are only 1/3HP and used sparingly. I have always read that an AC motor can only be powered with a true sine wave inverter. They are not universal motors, they have start capacitors. So much for reading

Hi Jeff , i used to run a drop saw on a modified sine wave inverter and that really did not like it , you could hear a humming from the motor that did not sound healthy at all , also like a fool plugged my fridge freezer into said inverter and it took out the electronics straight away , they really donā€™t run nice at all unless on pure sine wave .

Happy new year everyone .

I did this and it worked and I never did it again . I bought a box with wires and a switch . and you connect it to your auto alternator and it delivers ac current by bypassing diodes . I used it once it worked never used it again . when you are producing ac you are not producing 12 volt and are draining battery . I also had trunk full of car batteries and water system that ran on rechargeable drill , I used 6 volt bulb in series with drill to recharge drill . We would drive around to recharge batteries .

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Dow family  :fireworks: May your gas be clean, and plentiful this year. :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

Happy new year to everyone!
Hopefully this year everyone can accomplish what they hope to.
Hopefully many of us will see each other in a place called Argos Indiana come June.
My sister celebrated it by playing ā€œfinal countdownā€ by Europe at the last end of 2020 and ā€œanother trip around the sunā€ by Kenny Chesney at the beginning of 2021
