UpDATE! From jakob.
Jakob called me a few minutes ago. They don’t have internet service where they are… and barely any phone service.
But he wanted to report that they are sitting on top of the highest peak of their route on top of the great divide.
Climbed up there on 100% Woodgas.
40-45 mph
never got over 1500 degrees on the grate.
Using a mixture of wood from different fuel stops.
Stopped at the top to look around and Let the transmission and gasifier etc cool down.
YaY!!! For jakob.
Now let’s just hope they have enough brake pads to get down the other side.
Would be the one good time to have a straight drive transmission and just engine brake the way down. Then again he can lock it into gear with his truck can’t he?
Go down into Utah side you want to use a little compression, lower gear. Some of the hill grades are 6% plus, and lots of cornering. Most of the construction has been done in the last 4 years is done now. It is very good roads.

Today was a good day. I had kinda been dreading this day for a while. As i was driving north on 25 I kept looking over at the mountains knowing i was going to have to cross them. It went way better than i had though it would. actually going up to the highest peak i didn’t do anything different that i had been. Most of the climbs were quite moderate with a lot of downhill to get up some speed. That was all until the Utah border. After the Utah border i went down hill for 28 miles then it began with the real steep ones that i ended up crawling most in first gear with the truckers. Coming down was quite easy I actually kept the accelerator down for a lot of it just to keep up with traffic. there was only one hill I had to use any brakes at all. We are now on the west side of salt lake city. I am very glad to have made it through town at night when traffic was low. Altitude defiantly causes a power loss in a gasifier. The truck was very weak most of the day even downhill as soon as i got down into salt lake city it was like i turned on the gasoline for all the power it had. No gasoline used today Except for the initial start up this morning, all traveling done on 100% wood.
Looking back on the first mountain range (the tallest Peak in this range on I-80)
Highest point of I80 in the rocky mountains.
I have a lot more pics and videos but they will have to wait. i have to get up and do it again tomorrow.
Beautiful over there. We did a trip when I was a young boy in the Canyon Lands National Park. We still talk about it. Beautiful and a lot of space. Did you see/ touch any snow crossing the highest point?
Inspiring trip. With or without woodgas. You will remember this for the rest of your life. Super to see the support you get. Enjoy!
Jakob, in post 151 third video, you mention coming into the town of Larvik. You must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. As far as I know Larvik is in Norway. You’re getting close to here. I’d better start bagging up for you
Here is a little up date. I just got off the phone talking to Jakob, they are on highway 80 heading across western Utah, they will be heading across the state of Arizona then turn north on highway 95 and head north up into Oregon. They are still on schedule, maybe a few hours late because of a later start this morning going to the store for supplies.
Jakob did do a big clean out of charcoal. Got a bag full out of the preheater drop box area and the lower clean out below the grate. The truck is running a lot better. He was up to 4 to 1 on vaccum difference and is now back to 2 to 1 difference.
